I only skimmed this topic, so apologies if this has been suggested.

I know that an in-game parser isn't likely to happen. But the idea of seeing your own DPS numbers on a striking dummy has been mentioned in the past.

I used to play a lot of typing games to improve my words per minute. I can now type over 90 WPM last time I was tested. What if some sort of DPS mini-game was set up in the Gold Saucer for people who wanted to practice their DPS? It could start out easy with just a striking dummy, then as you advance and get better it would start fighting back so that you could work in dodging and other strategies. Your goal would be to beat your own high score and it's not shared on any leaderboard or anything. It's just for self-improvement.

    I don't know, maybe it's silly, but it's a thought.

That sounds very fun, but I'd like a leaderboard for each Job/Class.

BUT - it does not help the practical situation of people wanting a parser in the actual game. I want one with everyone's dps on it (just add it to the party bar?), but I'd settle for one for just me so I can improve.

I'd love to know if my WHM/SCH was healing everyone AND doing 130dps in a dungeon!

I game parsers are unlikely but due to game design it should be given a higher amount of consideration. A target dummy parser wouldn't be enough in my opinion (as I've stated before with reasons why). It would be a good first step and be of at least some value.

A mini game is kinda a cool idea actually i would be all for that just on its own merits

Think of it as "ghost mode" in MarioKart time trials. You see your character performing as normal WITH a slightly transparent version of yourself doing the actions at timings saved to your "phantom record."

This would allow you to arrive at the optimal rotation w/o a parser through efforts not so dissimilar.

This idea has a lot going for it. For one, it sounds like a lot of fun. For another, it seems like an advanced tutorial disguised as a challenge game that we've needed in the game for a while. I'd hope Team Yoshi considers something like this. It might be a bit tardy for Gold Saucer but I hope it's implemented somewhere (Ishgard, perhaps?).

I'm glad there is no official parser and looks like there will never be one. Although I agree that it would prevent annoying misinformation, I will also say that most of my experiences with users who use 3rd party parsers have been annoying. I think such a device is mostly useful to hardcore players but can really be detrimental to casual players. So, while I wouldn't say parsers are inherently dangerous, the people who them can get carried away with the information they provide...

So. Up until now I've been against parsers. My argument has been completely wrong. COMPLETELY WRONG!

There is nothing wrong with a parser. It's a glorified calculator that retrieves data from the battle log that is already there. It simplifies it and puts it into a read out that people can understand.

The problem lies with the person who uses it, not the tool itself.

A parser is like a hammer.
Both are tools. - A hammer is used to build. A parser is used to read out numbers.
Both have constructive uses. - A hammer can help build a home. A parser can help improve where a player is weak in their rotation.
Both can cause harm. - A hammer can be used to bludgeon someone to death. A parser can be used to call out weak chains in parties in a malicious manner.

Both are tools, it depends on the wielder of these tools to determine their overall effect and outcome.
