Something I hope to see with Heavensward, but doubt it will happen, is that Level of weapon start to catch back up to the iLevel by having some lateral progression. More options for iLev 120 items that have varying stat bonuses. Maybe things that are more specific and less generalized. Like an Axe that has a bonus to Emnity Generation, or a +to Skull Sunder, or a decrease in recast time for Infuriate.
Still, thanks for the post above there Kiara!
You wanna know what's gonna be hilarious? All the supporters of Relics continuing to be built upon through every expansion whining when the old grinds get nerfed so hard you can blow through them (all of them, Zenith to Nexus) in a week.
You can have a weapon that sticks with you forever and is always second-rate to weapons from raiding, or you can have an old weapon that carries prestige and signifies that you put in the time and the hard work to create a lasting symbol of your veteran status. But unless SE really wants to piss off the new subs, you can't have both.

This will pretty much have to happen. The current incarnation moving to the 3.1 version can only really go 1 of 2 ways:
A) The entire 2.0 line is nerfed into the ground like you mentioned.
B) They make a kind of catch up quest for players, whereas players can do a quest(s) and after start on the 3.1 version
This also becomes very necessary for brand new players, and anyone wanting to play the new jobs in this expansion and any future expansion.
I think they should let people "skip" a decent bit of the old relic quest to a relic-type weapon that's relevant to current ilevel, post heavensward.
BUT they should still still have to go through the stat-customization process via materia. Having the Zodiac weapon already would allow you to skip a very time/cost intensive step.
Lets say in heavensward there's tome gear at i150, raid gear at i160. This will give wiggle room for a more 2.0-style ilevel ramp. You get to make a new relic. The first quest either gives you the i145 in "traditional" stats, or the i145 in your zodiak stats. Next upgrade is i155, but you have to put stats on it via a nexus-like process. If you had the zodiac weapon you get to skip the materia part.

I wanted to be rewarded somehow for completing the zodiak going into the expansion but if I'm stuck with the look of this spear I'm dissapointed we won't be getting a new relic. I just don't like the longinus and hope for a change to it soon. It just isn't very dragoon-y. Reading that interview with Yoshi makes sound like it will be this zodiak look for a while.
When I first saw Longinus I thought a mistake had been made and the new BLM weapon had simply been mislabeled.I wanted to be rewarded somehow for completing the zodiak going into the expansion but if I'm stuck with the look of this spear I'm dissapointed we won't be getting a new relic. i personally hope they continue the same kinda of upgrade process time consuming quests every cpl of months to upgrade the relic weapons :3 i quite enjoy the time n effort that goes into them aslong as they will always remain the 2nd best weapon in game then i really dont see a problem with it :3

You enjoy spending months on the upgrade process only to be rewarded with a weapon that is a marginal upgrade from the previous version?i personally hope they continue the same kinda of upgrade process time consuming quests every cpl of months to upgrade the relic weapons :3 i quite enjoy the time n effort that goes into them aslong as they will always remain the 2nd best weapon in game then i really dont see a problem with it :3
