I guess most people just feel fulfilled in their normal lives and so escaping into this "world" isn't so much a way to compensate as just a way to relax and have fun. If you don't have much to live for, and you're desperate for attention, this is one small way, albeit negative, to get it. I had a roommate like this once, he was desperate for attention so he acted out, got drunk, acted like a fool. He didn't care that it was negative attention, he just wanted attention. I think it has something to do with the way you were raised. If you don't progress past a point of maturity, it's hard to ever progress past that point.
