Archer/Lancer were classes in Final Fantasy Tactics. In addition, Lancers in FFT were just a different name for Dragoons. As for Archers, one of the series most iconic characters (Rosa Farrell) uses a bow and has a special bow attack (Aim). She's a White Mage, but she's also an Archer.

The only one that sticks out is Gladiator, I don't think there's been an FF game with one of those.

I'm speaking of Final Fantasy's that carry a Roman Numeral.. not Tactics or any of the other side games that carry FF.. I don't care if we keep the class system.. i just want final fantasy names.. WHM, RDM, BLM, SMN, RNG, THF, MNK, Viking, Chocobo Knights, BLU, DNC, PUP, etc, etc, et al

LOL, your quite silly. FF12 makes FFT, FFTA, FFTA2, and even Vagrant Story part of the Roman Numeral Final Fantasy stories and isn't that what this is really about?

The argument is derailing into Class vs. Jobs when it really is Class/Jobs vs. Overhaul removing Classes in favor of Jobs.

Hint, one option gives you both.

I have yet to see someone post that Classes should be the de facto standard. I do see arguments that assume that is what people are asking for but they are making false assumptions and should re-examine their premise prior to posting.

As many poorly supported opinions as there are, I'm still glad there's a discussion.

Abolishing the class system is one of the worst suggestions one can come up with. Right now the armory system is what keeps this game very unique. The job system they are currently implementing is only the beginning of what could potentially be a dynamic job/class system.

One class isn't going to be one job forever. When the system grows we may see one class specializing into 2 or more jobs. We will also begin to see mix and match (2 class > x rank = some other job). Dropping the class system will only make this kind of specialization not possible.

A more practical scenario of why this specialization system could be nice. Let's say I'm an ARC fighting the Deepvoid Ogre in the current r45 dungeon. If I specialize to RNG I do more damage.. GREAT. But in the process of doing so I may lose the ability to use skills from LNC/CON/THM. In a fight like that, sometimes the situation calls for even DD to help heal and a ARC using LNC ws to reduce tp generation/stun makes the fight go much much smoother. But in the same dungeon, say a fight against the last boss Batraal, LNC ws become essentially pointless for ARC and dps becomes much more important. Then I can swap over as RNG to finish the fight. So yes, I believe that we SHOULD NOT abolish the class system.

And to those that argue why PUGs don't need mp, etc... right now this game is built to seriously reward those that rank multiple jobs. A PUG with stygian spikes/siphon MP from THM and Sacrifice/Cure would perform much better at soloing anything. Are you seriously going to wait for HP to regen or that long cooldown on second wind? If a party member dies and the mages are preoccupied keeping the tank up, any other DoW DD could essentially step in to toss a few backup heals or raise the dead member. The ability to bring skills from one class to another is one of the best aspects of this game right now.

Just because your class unlocks a Job doesn't meant you need to use that job.
Since for jobs we only currently have 2 builds, mostly strength vs. accuracy, Jobs are good to offer another option. Jobs might not even be good for every situation. And since we'll be locked into Job skills ONLY, they're very poor for soloing.

Jobs aren't even out yet, give it a few more months so we can get more information. :/

So how are you going to make the gladiator questline work for paladins? Just curious. How are you going to turn the gambling, house-of-ill repute owning Pugilists into monks?

What the OP fails to recognize is that eliminating the classes ignores the entire lore of the game. Sure the devs could rewrite all the quests and npc dialogue in the game and animate new CS etc, but do you really think they can afford to. If you don't think turning the existing gladiator guild into the paladin guild just by replacing the word "gladiator" with "paladin" simply wouldn't make any sense then you probably don't know much about gladiators.

But having a "Cecil-like" quest where a rough and tumble gladiator gains the ability to call on the power of the paladin?

    a) That is awesome
    b) That is cheaper and a better use of dev resources than reworking the lore of the game from the ground up
    c) It fits with existing lore
    d) Did I mention how it has the potential to be an epic quest as well?
    e) It is very final fantasy like.

Yeah. So that is why they don't just scrap the entire game and start from scratch.
