Constant spurts of seeming server lag.

    Character: Fahros Lesdenfor
    Realm: Diabolos

My issue is that lately, within the past couple days, I have noticed what seems to be frequent server side lag. Characters will run in place for a split second, then zip/slide ahead to catch up to where they are in reality a split second later. When pulling bosses they will remain frozen for a split second, then pop up next to my character.

This has been extremely frustrating the past few days of play. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

What's very strange to me, is that my fiance plays the game right next to me, on the same internet connection. She doesn't seem to have the issue near as regularly as I do, if at all. I don't know if perhaps she is just not noticing as much as I am, or if it isn't actually occurring on her system.

My internet connection is hard wired to my computer, and is more than sufficient for MMO gaming. I have 55 Mbps down and 12 to 15 Mbps up.

I have a very strong hardware getup, and I experience 0 fps lag in the game. I'm 100fps+ most of the time, and to repeat, get no fps jitters what so ever. This is purely an internet / connection / server side issue.

Can anyone help me diagnose exactly what's going on here, or help me find a way to fix it? I would be so appreciative. This is kind of driving me crazy!

    Thanks,
    ~Fahros

I've been having a similar issue the past week or two, but have been unable to diagnose if it's server-side or my ISP. It seems to get worse during combat.

I can confirm that it seems to get worse during combat...some dungeons will have these mini lag spikes occurring probably once or twice a minute. "Constant" may have been a bit of an exaggeration, but to be honest, when playing for hours upon hours a day, it does seem rather constant.

Sounds like you may be getting a lot of packets delayed/out of order or lost in transit that may then be getting retransmitted. May want to look into getting your routing to the server diagnosed to see if there is bad congestion along the route. It's been an ongoing problem with the internet in general for certain sections of North America for well over two decades now (been wrangling with it off and on in my area and my ISP since about 1997--but it's far better than it was when Win98 was the dominant domestic OS of the time). One such region is south of Montreal in the US, and where the majority of the US and Oceania traffic (like, 2/3's of it) ultimately winds up going through on it's way there. And let's not forget Southern California and all it's woes either... people that have to come through that region as well can get double-dipped on the congestion factor.

Apologies for the late response here...

I am still having this issue though. The most frustrating part of this is that I'm not sure if it's my connection, the games servers, or how to test it. I've talked to several people on this issue, and the vast majority report they've noticed mini spikes like this in their own gameplay experiences, but very few claim to have it lay seige to their experience like it does to mine.

It has been making combat rather unenjoyable for me as of late. Do developers / admins ever respond to these threads? Is there anyway I can run some tests to track down exactly what is happening here and attempt to prevent it?

I have the issue as well on Tonberry. It happened after the 2.45 hot fixes and it's now happened again after the 2.5 hot fixes. I logged in before to discover a 3-5 second delay in movement or doing anything (eg. Mounting / dismounting). Even mining mats gets progressively more difficult. I dared not even try a dungeon or a raid. I thought it was an issue on my side so I logged out to reset the modem and router. Now I cannot even login in. There is presently. A 3-5 sec delay before the password and security key is accepted, another 3 secs before the character screen loads and then we you select your character to login, the next message is re: a lobby connection error.

http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...=1#post2616649 detailed post about diagnosing network probs here

this is basically what it looks like when I have a giant lag spike: http://gyazo.com/a7cb455877efbe72d477b54854ded18e sometimes with complete packet loss.

pathping couldn't really find anything remarkable but this: http://gyazo.com/d1ada56ec2b83f6cd87917ada129c31b this hop consistently seemed to drop packets, but nothing else out of the ordinary out of ~18 jumps, and no low ms.

it only happens occasionally, but it can be anywhere from a brief hiccup (still irritating while trying to maintain a rotation, tank, whatever) to dead stopping for several seconds. neither of these fly with the sort of content i've been doing lately

also i've never seen any CS happen in this forum frankly. seems rather pointless to have a tech support forum with noone staffing it

I tried again last night, my time, with the same results I reported earlier. I tried again moments ago, morning my time, and can report there seems to be a dramatic improvement in performance. I assume that the lag spikes and extreme latency is as a result of high server loads on Tonberry because of "free login" weekend.
