    Just hit 50 fishing... Help!

So tonight I hit 50 fishing (my first gathering/crafting job), and I took a look at the "gear treadmill". Holy crap. So I obviously need to start making money to raise my stats so that I can catch the stuff needed to get the high-end gear. Where do I start? I appreciate all advice. Thanks!

Side-question - Would it be okay to make this my only gil-making job? I am not really a big fan of other gathering or any crafting, but I dig this because I can watch Netflix while I do it.

    Side question first.

You can make gil from fishing but other careers are more lucrative. Then again you can't make gil from any of those while watching a movie and hanging onto a vibrating controller.

If you have the gil, skip the AF gear and go straight into Forager's. Then again the AF will have dropped in price.

There is a meld cap thread somewhere on this forum. Don't meld the hat. It will be replaced the soonest of all your gear. Don't buy the iL 55 gathering accessories, get iL 70 battle accessories because each can be melded with 1 more gathering and perception than the iL 55 stuff.

I suppose you start by fishing for high value fish that you can fish right now. White and red coral, hammerhead and silver sharks, razor clams blacklip and r. oysters, there are others. For instance timeworn boarskin maps, handily fished in reaver hide, a great place for red coral and blacklip oysters.

Level Culinarian to 30 and unlock desynthisys. Desynth the low value fish to level desynthsis. This is a must to maximize the cash flow from fishing.

Once your gathering is getting to 340 this is too: http://ffxivfisher.appspot.com/?
