Ifrit-Egi has higher potency, but less damage...

I did a test on the 2 and Garuda does about 100 more damage than Ifrit with just his basic attack, if he adds his auto attack, he does around the same as Garuda. I dont understand why its like this. Unless Ifrit gets a modifier that ignores enemy armour, Garuda will be the go to choice no matter what. Granted I havnt tested this with the Monk blunt resistance debuff so who knows, maybe thats Ifrit's saving grace. But even then, I'd rather have Garuda as she has contagion which helps with mana management.

Even without slashing/blunt debuffs, Burning Strike + Auto-Attack is about 20% stronger than Wind Blade

But there are times where Ifrit doesnt auto attack. He seems to use it whenever he pleases.

The only time it doesn't auto-attack is if it's not in range or is put on Steady. Otherwise, it will auto-attack every 3s regardless of whatever else it is doing.

I am afraid you are mistaken. Ifrit is proven to be significantly higher DPS than garuda once you get weapons with ilvl110 or greater. Not sure how you did your test, but something is incorrect there

Garuda does not have auto-attacks in the truest meaning of the word. All her DPS comes from abilites.

I did a quick dummy parse for you to demonstrate:

    Garuda-Egi: 89 DPS
    Ifrit-Egi: 103 DPS
    Ifrit-Egi + Dkick: 115 DPS

The parses were only 3 minutes long and done with the High Allagan Grimoire, but you can see quite a significant difference already.

Even though ifrit has higher damage output, I prefer to use him on the adds, and use garuda for the bosses. Contagion really helps in long battles.

Unfortunately, summon switching is difficult to use without causing more damage to yourself from the massive mana cost to resummon. Contagion DPS increase alone is not enough to make up the difference in attack power from ifrit. The one thing that contagion can do is to make SMN MP pool go a little further since they do not have to recast DoT's as much, but this gain is very minimal. No matter how many times I try, Garuda nevers performs for me like Ifrit does.

The only time I will ever use Garuda is if there is frequent target switching, frequent melee knockback abilities, when I have to have magical pet damage (Cube in T11)(ifrit is physical damage), or a significant amount of AoE damage (cause contagion+Bane = love)

Does stun still have diminished return that prevent Ifrit from just being on Sic? It's crappy I have a nice 110 potency attack that I can't use in case the mob needs to be stunned.

yes, stuns from egi's do still add to the diminishing return system that FFXIV uses. Though this only matters on a small number of bosses so if you know ahead of time, you can adjust accordingly
