a scholar is not the same as a Scholar. a Scholar is someone who is of the Scholar job (which, in Eorzean lore, is soley the your player character since he/she was privy to the lost art of the Nymians). A scholar is someone who is "learned." A MRD can be a scholar, but it can also be a smithy, a teacher, a babysitter, a lawyer, a cook, or whatever profession/hobby it wants to be. In fact, all of the members of the Circle of Knowing are scholars, as they focus mainly on accumulated knowledge.

The thing about FFXIV, you can't really take our "jobs" at face value. They are completely separate from Eorzean professions and/or hobbies.

Moenbryda is the most (only) interesting new character in a good long while and immediately became my favorite among the scions. Killing her of instead of one of the stale originals who played virtually no role in the latest patches (Thancred is just asking to be killed of at this point) was a travesty. Shame on you Yoshi.

If you go with that complaint about characters then it's because you directly go with a "don't care for this fela" attitude from the get go, and thus, don't feel any character is interesting.

I really liked Moenbryda. On the short time she has been with us, we got to learn quite more than we probably should have, and listening and thinking of all the conversations, you can go further with the experience.

I also recommend chatting with the character if its possible, even if you don't exactly require to proceed. You will get something out of them sometimes that might tell you who they are and so forth.

Consider - from a writer's POV - that everything introduced must have reason or purpose. In the brief time, Moenbryda fulfilled several of her own personal goals, and gave the Warrior of Light and the Scions answers, a renewed conviction, and purpose. To just keep her around arbitrarily after that would see her fall into obscurity; there just to be there. She HAD to either leave or die. And while the Scions had lost members before, the loss never hit so close to home as with Moen. Now it's personal. The Ascians are no longer the eyes in the dark staring at them, and Nabriales confirmed that, noting that your Blessing of Light (and their forced restraint) is now gone. A fact that I'm a little upset was so easily glossed over, but given the situation, I could see it getting lost in the mix.

Amidst all the other threats they face, the Ascians just took #1 on the hit list. We all liked Moenbryda. She was that warm, folksy kind of lightheartedness the otherwise too-serious Scions needed at that point. But she played her part, and she herself realized it, thus she exited, stage left.

I may be overglamorizing it, but Moenbryda's sacrifice is to FFXIV what Aerith's death was to FFVII. That polarizing shot to the heart that makes the audience/heroes say "you've gone too far", and truly steel themselves for the battles ahead. And Sormy's (I'm calling mini-Midgardsormr "Sormy") cryptic "there will be others" was the sobering reminder that no one - apparently not even the Warrior of Light is safe now. The game has changed, and the threat is elevated.

I cried. Like, for real actual tears, snot, everything, when Urianger showed up. To me it was obvious that he was devastated.

I really liked Moenbryda. Maybe it's the Roegadyn thing, I don't know. Also, we had the same axe. But i'm going to miss her. I kinda felt like I had a sister in the Scions with her around...

Having watched a lot of foreign films especially Japanese and Chinese. They don't grieve like we do. They are more solemn about it and to me this fits exactly with what is illustrated. You could see by the expressions on everyone's face and to even have the memorial. They are all professionals fighting a war. They knew what the cost was and that it was bound to happen. It all was made clear with the Urianger acted in the CS following. You could tell he was going to miss his friend and dare I say maybe former lover. They had a thing more than just friendship

I agree with the op, the concept of Moen's character was imo very good. This could have been a very noteworthy event, this was the right time in plot and the right character to kill. Storytelling wise it fell flat for me and most I've discussed it with because the revelations happened too fast, and they were buried under exposition overkill.

To use a previous example this could have been the Arieth/Aries moment, what we got was that stuffed animal cait sith just got smooshed, who cares.
