Generally I just let them do what they want, unless it's causing the party to become dangerous health wise.

However if someone is being rude I won't let it fly. I don't have the energy to run with drama.

My golden rule is: don't like it? Don't stay. That includes myself, if I am uncomfortable with how someone is playing, I will politely leave.

Usually a simple reminder like harassment will be reported to the GM gets them to pipe down. For example like last night in WoD with lots of people being new or first timers you had some guy harassing the tank about the MT dying to much at the first boss. I put that little reminder out there and shortly after that all that verbal abuse stopped.

Don't use American ideology on international online interactions. Our laws do not apply here.
But I always follow the golden rule and it should be a part of the unofficial rules of the internet.

Usually, the one being harassed really can't defend themselves. It will just make things worse. It's up to other players to stand up for them.

I partied with this incredibly rude, condescending WHM a few days ago. She spent every boss fight insulting me and telling me to try harder, which caused her to die over and over again. I had to do both our jobs. Though I attempted to stand up for myself, she just kept jabbing me while the rest of the team was silent. i, personally, would have sincerely appreciated anyone on the team sticking up for me.

I have a strict policy: 'he who whines about heals, gets no heals', which I'm also happy to apply to rude players of any description.

By all means, remind me to switch off cleric stance, or make a suggestion regarding my strategy, but you'd damn well better be polite about it.

I have been known to get cranky at Bards who don't play ballad when both healers are out of MP, though.

So you respond to a player telling you you're bad by being bad? Way to be the bigger person. Seriously people....All you're doing is confirming what he said and then trolling. Two wrongs do not make a right. You're just as bad in this situation.

Not trying to be rude here (American as well) but there is no place for the American Constitution in an international forum. Some people myself included can view this as short sighted and rude for even mentioning. My apologies if I seem abrupt in the shortness of this post.

People don't want to be the odd one out as it tends to put them in an uncomfortable and often vulnerable position. Remember high school, when some tough kid would point out the weakest in the room and shame them in any way they could? Remember that rarely did anyone go next to the other kid and tell the bully to back off? The internet is a lot like high school. #noescape

I won't even get into how your statement is wrong because the point is pretty much completely moot. What I want to know is why you would even bring up the US Constitution on a Japanese game. ._.

She wasn't the first one to mention the First Amendment. She replied to the person I quoted first.

@OP - honestly, when people are picking a fight like that, how exactly I address them is kinda dependent on who I'm with. If I'm in a premade, I'll ask them to knock it off; if they don't, they get vote kicked. If I'm solo queued, I'll generally ask if we can all just chill out and just finish the dungeon. If they don't, I'll initiate a vote kick. At the end of the day, we're all there to do the same thing - finish the duty. Anything that's keeping us from doing that is detrimental. Killing slowly due to a bad rotation still gets the job done. Standing there bickering doesn't get the job done at all. If a player doesn't seem to have a great grasp on their class, you can ask if he/she is willing to take some advice. Offer that advice constructively. Harassing them is inexcusable.

I tend to just suffer in silence when I'm grouped with black mages not using Flare, bards not playing any songs, tanks overpulling, etc. The one time I tried to offer advice, the player responded by telling me, "eat a <male reproductive organ>"

Ever since then I generally don't say anything to anyone. If it gets to a point where it's hindering the run, I'll vote kick or just leave myself. I'd rather take a 30 minute penalty and go do something else for awhile than play with stupid.
