If you want purely to make money, then probably, except GSM since accessories should be released next week. It's pretty expensive/ difficult to unlock the tier 2 master books, and actually if you've just hit 50 on your crafting classes, you still have the not insignificant expense of unlocking the tier 1 master books (each requires 5 HQ i70 materials -- vanya silk, darksteel ingot, treated spruce lumber, etc.). I've been catching up myself and don't really worry about the gil so much since crafting is the primary use of gil anyway as far as I can tell.
Never too late!
That's not entirely true. The best time to make gil is at the start of a new patch cuz old items will almost always get cheaper with them (with few exceptions, such a materia). Their mats will also get cheaper too but the overall profit will always go down. However, it does require a hefty investment in both time and gil in order to get started on newly introduced items. When the game first started, it was fair game but as it is now, the economy is starting to reflect real economics, where the rich do have a big advantage. However, unlike real economics, you can make your way to the top through pure effort alone; connections, luck, skills, and talents don't really matter.
To actually answer your question though, no it is not too late to make 4 star. 4 star is still very profitable, albeit quite tedious to make, and will likely still be profitable for awhile after 2.5 items comes out. Note that 2.5 items will not replace 2.4 items, they will simply be on different equipment slots.
2.5 will also likely introduce far less profitable items than 2.4 did. For example, only a handful of crafted accessories are highly desirable, especially since dreadwyrm and poetic accessories are plentiful at this point. This means that you will probably still be relying the 2.4 items and since their profits will only continue to drop the longer you wait, why not start now?
Also, very important, all the investments you make in order to make 4 star will almost certainly be carried over. For example, 4 star requires material from both 3 star and 2 star crafting. Most of the gear needed for 3 star crafting were also needed for 4 star crafting, don't expect the 4 star Artisan stuff to be replaced any time soon.
Lastly, don't count on the cost of 4 star Artisan gear to drop by any significant amount after the patch. They will only likely drop significantly after the new items have already drop out of their most profitable zones.

the artisans will only drop if sealants become cheaper as the other mats are common anyways.
I can see why you want to hold of but expansion is months away and in that time you could make a lot of gil and therefore speed up any future enhancements the devs throw us.
people say gil is worthless but really it can help you push your classes beyond other people quite quickly if you have enough
no it doesn't help you level but it does help make gear cheaper and any other tools you may need whilst others are making do with subpar gear whilst levelling.

I came into ARR all 50 but hated the crafting when I started in ARR so I put it to the side. Lately I have picked it up again for achievements and find it less awful. My plan is to not spend any gil until 3.0. I am convinced that at ilvl60 we will get new gear cheaply that blows away anything available now, or at least equals it, and there will be a cheap way to get the books to catch up.

the level 60 gear will be better than what we have now for sure but your gonna need gear to do the crafts on the way, unless they rework all the recipes from 2.0 to 3.0 so that lower gear is enough to progress to 60.. but that seems like to much work. and so chances are new gear all the way to 60.
that also being said if you have artisans now that will in all likelihood be enough for you to grind to 60 with. where as af gear might not be.

I've been wondering this also with the expansion approaching. I have all my green HQ items for each class but i really don't see a point in progressing much further if item progression when the expansion comes out doesn't require the current set of endgame gear/melds.
If you're enjoying it then keep on trucking imo it wont hurt anything in the end ...
