the main flaw in many people reasoning with this being a bad idea, is that this update is it...... period......

but it is not, this is step one (how the battle system was done) in a multi step process to fix crafting.

why do you think we are still not paying? this game is going to be flipped over a few times, and inside out some as well before it is released for PS3, consider us all in beta again, untill the PS3/payment starts.

I can Imagen some people are, just as some have assumed the Materia system will be complex or really simple.
I try'd personally to stay focused purely on what we do know, and what will be lost/gained.
And I still after reading all the comments feel that the update is 80% good 20% a lost potential for the game.

Edit : And yes i agree its beta again,
If i thought this would fall on totally def ears id just play till they broke it.
Or till they star charge (unless I'm still happy enough with it then id keep playing obviously)

I'm going to keep trying to make them make a great game with depth and enough challenge, not to turn it into just another generic mmo.

I actually thinks this particular announcement is only half bad. I keep getting sucked into arguments about Parts which I'm glad to see go. But it will have a very severe impact on leveling. I think the Dye thing is a great change and the material revisions are a long needed adjustment. But gutting basic systems without telling us how they a being replaced only leads to them forcing terrible things down our throats. If they don't tell us what they intend to do with facilities and treatises I think we can safely kiss them good bye. And the secondary skill removal was just asinine, it only needed balancing.

Can you point us to where they actually said crafting was going to be done in steps because I seem to have missed that producer letter. Seriously, maybe I missed it.

So true Kailea. And personally, if they had of gone through all the FFXIAH.com post being made when it was announced they were "doing" another MMO, (had actually been in development for YEARS prior) They could possibly avoided all this mess. They had a solid system that just needed to be tweaked and refined and of course better graphics. they got the graphics ,,,LOL but looks like their idea to redifine the MMORPG genre went very awry. Now, they're doing what they should have, listening to the players themselves but now, some are so hapy with the original and dislike the change and others like the change and want more. This coupled with a lack of community = RAGE! /shrugs

i think the problem is not that there proposing to change it, cos although i don't agree with this dramatic change, i do agree atm it's not working as intended and things need to change.

there are other thing they can do like:

Make food stack higher (and show ppl the benifits of food so it actually sells).

Allow ppl to sell more things at once, i have lot armour peices i can't sell due to lack of space this will make more parts avalible for ppl that don't want to make them.

have a Wanted search counter may help with ppl putting out offers rather then ppl paying the prices ppl are currenty asking for.

and it a few basic things like that, if that don't work change it least then they can say they tried to save it

well, maybe they can make a really complicated recipe for some items, like most people says, if you are going to make an excalibur as an example with the new system you can make only that recipe complicated, that needs several high level parts to be able to make it, leaving the level up process simplified and easier to achieve. I think they kinda said that in the future secondary skills will be used for crafter benefits, so they might do complicated recipes for high level crafters.

While I think that the system is certainly in need of some love, in regards to parts, I fear they're going to have to heavy a hand with it.

I love the realism of XIV's crafting. I like that to make a piece of armor I'm going to need to make several different pieces and then put it together to make one complete piece of armor. I don't mind the effort and rather like it in fact.

I think they just need to set a "number of steps" limit. If a piece of armor takes four parts, and each of those parts has three parts and two of those parts require two parts (which is currently realistic) then you're talking (oh gad math) 17 synths to make one item.

Just take out a step, reduce it to a limit of say, six synths to make one item and you've reduced the tedium while keeping the worth of the item as well as the realism and level of complicated that dedicated crafters enjoy.

Back in 2006 I quit EQ2 after it made very similar crafting system changes and completely removed subcombines from the game. With one patch it went from the second most realistic and fun crafting system in an MMO to one of the easiest. It took SoE years to rebalance to tedium > fun ratio and make their crafting interested to the dedicated crafting community.

Simplify and streamline, by all means. But don't pull an SoE, SE.

for sure it's over kill, the dyes is cool, maybe even the not needing support is cool. but the rest is just over kill, making crafting just to easy and less complex. needing parts from other crafts is a good thing, and needing other crafts for item syths is also a good thing. i guess they want this only for really high lvs in the long time future. kinda sucks, ffxi had these things on last lvs like 70-75. and was only used for the grind really, the items to use this way weren't hot items really. guess this is another way for se to make the game easy for people who plan on playing 2hrs a week. yaay.

as for things like ...it will save us space ...ehh give us more space.
no need support ...does this render the point of food with craft abilities useless? or do we need to buy food now instead?
easier isn't better it just creates a crafting system no different then any other system in mmo's, u are rendering the hard work from half the devoted in game players useless, very bad.

also on parts, if this game didn't suck and was packed with players like it should of if wasn't launched early, these parts would probably sell at cost in wards, like in ffxi, u could buy ingots of any kind for the cost of the mats to make them, save time and buy them made, but people can use them as grinds, the grinds we have now would of and could of changed and i think this new changes just killed this a bit too.

I'm interested in how the other language forums are reacting to this.
