As I posted elsewhere, us not knowing the context within which these changes will live makes it very difficult to evaluate them fairly.
There is little-to-no detailed information about the materia system, or how it works.
There is next-to-no information about this "customizing gear for particular classes, which is reflected by color".
Perhaps the whole thing will come together and be magic. However, taken out of context (as it must be, since that is how it was presented), it appears that the crafting system is being stripped of whatever depth it currently has, with essentially nothing presented in its place. We will still have the same synthing system, that I enjoy very much for crafting items for actual use, but which is terrible upon massive over-repetition for grinding up ranks.
With the highly simplified recipe system shown, I can only assume that the materia system (in terms of what crafters acually to to slot them) will be simple and uninspired. After all, slotting a single materia is zero risk, and so will surely be something like a repair. The depth and interesting parts of the materia system may be great for those that use them (combat classes), but the crafters will likely be robots doing boring repetitive tasks in the background.
In the end, I don't see how this improves gameplay for crafters (rewarding skillful play, from Matsui), or how it points to such an improvement in the future. I certainly hope that there is, and that Bayohne will give us a glimmer of hope.
