I wanted to take this topic seriously, then I read the OP.

I don't see the problem here, even with the lore :
- When you want to empower your relic, you have to have it equipped (Books for Animus, Light for Nexus).
- When you are trying to find some materials to enhance your weapon, you don't need to have it equipped, after all, who cares where you got your Alexandrites and your Zodium from ?

It's also great design that the stages alternate between requiring your relic and not.
Getting Atma - Not technically required. Any zenith relic will do
Getting Animus - Required
Getting Novus - Not required
Getting Nexus - Required
Getting Zodiac - Not required

It prevents me from getting completely sick of playing my main.
