Fraps records massive video files. I remember a friend decided to make a Let's Play for youtube with it, and it was 70gb for 15 minutes of video.
I use Fraps for my pictures and videos, but I use it for recording short videos to make gifs out of. Size examples: 27 seconds of Dragon Age: Inquisition @ 1920x1080 = 2.25GB || 22 seconds of The Sims 4 @ 1920x1026 = 579mb || 1 second of FFXIV (accidental keypress) @ 1920x1080 = 55MB.
So, I don't think Fraps is good for recording long videos. :P I think Bandicam recorded much smaller sized videos, but I couldn't use it as Photoshop didn't agree with importing its videos into the "Import Video Frames Into Layers" tool. I don't remember the videos being bad quality, though.

Fraps doesn't use any special codecs. It just records raw, uncompressed video, which is why the files are huge. Bandicam, OBS, and software from Nvidia are three that I know of that record and compress files automatically, though I can't attest to their quality because I don't use them.

I highly recommend Shadowplay if you have the sufficient NVidia Graphics Card. LAlt+F9 anything recorded though it also recording Voip programs.

Ah, okay. Thanks for clearing that up. Boyfriend was trying to figure it out a few months ago and found someone say it had a special codec. I just took that as a good enough reason, I suppose.
