I need help with a quest.. Plus many questions

Hi so I'm new and I reached level 18. I'm doing a quest called 'Good for What Ales You' and I'm at the place where the quest tells me to go. I'm on the ship called Astalicia but I can't go down the stairs because a rope is in the way and I can't jump it. There is literally no one to talk to and no items to use.

-Below are many other random questions and concerns I had-

Anyway, there are a ton of confusing things that are never explained in the game and are very vague how to do them such as dying gear, how to start converting gear into materia and putting it into gear.

Why would I receive a quest called Lavender beds when I can't go there since I'm poor at such a low level?

I don't understand the the whole field gear thing vs battle gear.

What jobs or professions or whatever are good for which class?

Why doesn't my reputation go up when I've done a ton of quests?

If someone could explain all these things to be it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Talking to one of the NPC's should get you to where you need to go if you wanna get on the air ship and off. Its usually the NPC behind the desk that leads to the air ship.

You can only start converting gear after getting one of your crafting classes to a certain level. Same applies for melding. To be able to dye gear, you need to talk to a lady in Western Thanalan, by around the Vesper Bay area, and complete the quest she gives you.

There is really no level requirement for Lavender beds. The quest is simply just for showing off the Lavender beds housing area.

Field gear is for your gathering classes. Battle gear is for combat classes.

As of right now each class has 1 job that they upgrade to when you've reached the requirements, Arcanist being the exception. Lancer => Dragoon ; Gladiator => Paladin ; Pugilist => Monk ; Archer => Bard ; Thaumaturge => Black Mage ; Conjurer => White Mage ; Arcanist => Summoner/Scholar

Your reputation goes up via receiving commendations from the dungeons, not from quests. Once you're around lv43+, your reputation will start to include beast tribe quests, which are dailies you can do.

Also it unlocks housing area on the city-state aetheryte so you can freely teleport yourself via aethernet.

This is incorrect. All you need to do is to have any (battle or magic) class at level 19 and go to Middle Thanalan to complete the materia converting quest. No need for DoH at all.

Yes - and no - you can always ask someone else to meld it for you.

That answers some things, but its not an airship. its an actual ship. The quest literally takes me to a location on the ship and there is a red circle on the map like I'm supposed to be there, but there are no NPCs to talk to and nowhere to go. I've google searched the quest a ton and they don't give me any info besides what I already know: that I have to talk to this YOUNG EXECUTIONER, but he's in the area of the ship that I can't go to for some stupid reason.

I think you have to go upstairs to the top deck of the ship, not down. But I could be wrong been awhile since I did that one.

for the quest I assume you have spoken to all three NPC's at fishermens bottom before entering the ship right? Anyway if you have spoken to all 3 in the red circle outside the ship then the npc you need is on the upmost deck of the ship, climb all the stairs to get up there and he is with many other npc's who are dancing.

Dye system is unlocked by the level 15 sidequest "Color Your World" in the Vesper Bay area of Western Thanalan.

Converting old gear into materia is unlocked by the sidequest "Forging the Spirit". It requires level 19, but doesn't matter on which class.
Melding materia onto new gear to use its properties is unlocked by the sidequest "Waking the Spirit". It requires you to be level 19 or above on a crafting class that can make gear (i.e. any of the crafting classes other than Culinarian).
Over-melding (i.e. melding more materia onto an item than it has slots for) is unlocked by the sidequest "Melding Materia Muchly". It requires you to be level 25 or above on a crafting class that can make gear.

All three of these quests are at the Bonfire area of Central Thanalan.

It's just a way of categorizing gear according to whether its stats are designed to aid combat classes (battle gear) or crafting/gathering classes (field gear).
