I still say updates, even ones that introduce a good bit of new content, don't necessarily need a trailer just to promote them.
But that aside, it's already been decided by SE to treat FFXIV's game updates as if they were expansions. Giving them titles, huge fanfare and promotion when they're just going to have another one 3 months later. Personally I would hope that there's enough content in the game that it wouldn't require so much more new content so quickly. Not that I don't appreciate having more content, because I do. It just feels like some of it is a bit rushed. I mean, if you can tackle everything in a 'major update' within a few days (or 1 day if you have the time to spare), with exception to things that require grinding.. which is the only means of stretching content out this game has right now.
I enjoy the game, but I do worry if this is the trend they are going to keep up, eventually it's going to feel like there's just nothing to do until the next update. I know a lot of players are currently or have already felt this kind of feeling. I'm starting to feel it too now. I finished my Zodiac relic on New Year's Eve and ever since it's like I don't have something to do in the game aside from just logging in to do dailies. Primal battles aren't really that fun, I still have a few EX that I haven't beat but I just don't really see a reason to since it doesn't effect me in any sort of way. There's no real reason to complete them other than for completion's sake. Dailies get me tomes to gear up easily enough. I don't need the drops from the EXs. I don't need coil, not even interested in it aside from the story aspect, which is viewable via youtube.
Basically I'm waiting for 2.5 because I want more main story... and I want to play around with the next stage in the Crystal Tower; WoD and see how that story concludes since it's content I can actually do without needing a static group of players to meet with at specific weekly times in order to complete. Also looking forward to the Golden Saucer, at least as a side thing, I'll definitely run around it at first and explore it, giving all the games a try and seeing what is actually fun in there (hopefully everything). I do want to do the new dungeons as well.
But all these new things already have videos out there you can look up. Why do I need to see the same things again, only this time with perhaps different music and snippets of story cutscenes from the new content interposed at random times while showing things out of order.
I dunno, I don't need spoilers on what's going to happen on the story. What they have revealed so far in videos is more than enough to interest me in the new content and it doesn't spoil anything other than what particular areas look like from a panoramic view.
they are probably breaking up 2.5 into two parts just so people can't go through it in a day or two because it won't all be there. So now we have to wait another month for the rest of the update's content anyway.
Personally I am looking forward to 3.0 probably more than anything. 2.5 is just a minor prelude to the end of this initial part of the story, though I don't think it's really going to have any kind of finale to it. Not like any other MMORPG storyline. Which is fine I guess, but I kinda wish they had it all there from the start.
If they were to do a trailer to promote the game itself, while including things from all of the 2.0-2.5 it would be better than just using only 2.5 content to promote the game to new players. And then it wouldn't be a 2.5 trailer, but just a new trailer for FFXIV featuring 2.x content before 3.0.
At this point, with the expansion on the horizon that would make more sense to me as far as interesting new players to try the game. People who already play the game should already know what to expect by now, and should be able to keep themselves informed. It's not like SE hides it's plans for XIV until the very last second. Information about 2.5 has been trickling in for a while now, as well as information about 3.0.
What I hope for with 3.0 + is that they are able to slow down a bit with updates, while making sure that each new update truly adds a good wealth of content to a variety of the game's aspects. Meaning there will already be enough content to last a good several months before needing to introduce another update.
...Well, I'm tired. Gonna end here. Wanting 3.0, but will settle for more story from 2.5 and World of Darkness.
