I really don't think it's a case of not wanting to spoil things.

    1) If you look at the 2.4 trailer, for example... there were spoilers about the Shiva storyline, as well as a scene or two from FCoB that were spoilerish. Didn't stop them from including them.
    2) It's their trailer. They can include or not include anything they want. They could easily build a trailer without including the spoiler material. Show things like WoD or the new dungeons... things we've already seen.

IMO if there isn't a trailer or at least a blog post about 2.5 tomorrow, that likely means it's not dropping on the 20th.

The 2.4 website launched around 10 days before 2.4 itself, though 2.3's launched a few weeks before, so there's not any real schedule for when they launch. So it'll likely come tommorow.

Did we ever get solid confirmation that Yoshi did indeed say 20th Jan at the Nico Nico event?

in english it is said as LATE jan, however there is a warning to those with the eternal bonding to not book during the 19th (assumed maintenance for 2.5) the 20th (2.5 day 1) and the 21st (2.5's emergency hot fix's) but according to a japanese newsletter thing it was specifically said as the 20th.

I still say updates, even ones that introduce a good bit of new content, don't necessarily need a trailer just to promote them.

But that aside, it's already been decided by SE to treat FFXIV's game updates as if they were expansions. Giving them titles, huge fanfare and promotion when they're just going to have another one 3 months later. Personally I would hope that there's enough content in the game that it wouldn't require so much more new content so quickly. Not that I don't appreciate having more content, because I do. It just feels like some of it is a bit rushed. I mean, if you can tackle everything in a 'major update' within a few days (or 1 day if you have the time to spare), with exception to things that require grinding.. which is the only means of stretching content out this game has right now.

I enjoy the game, but I do worry if this is the trend they are going to keep up, eventually it's going to feel like there's just nothing to do until the next update. I know a lot of players are currently or have already felt this kind of feeling. I'm starting to feel it too now. I finished my Zodiac relic on New Year's Eve and ever since it's like I don't have something to do in the game aside from just logging in to do dailies. Primal battles aren't really that fun, I still have a few EX that I haven't beat but I just don't really see a reason to since it doesn't effect me in any sort of way. There's no real reason to complete them other than for completion's sake. Dailies get me tomes to gear up easily enough. I don't need the drops from the EXs. I don't need coil, not even interested in it aside from the story aspect, which is viewable via youtube.

Basically I'm waiting for 2.5 because I want more main story... and I want to play around with the next stage in the Crystal Tower; WoD and see how that story concludes since it's content I can actually do without needing a static group of players to meet with at specific weekly times in order to complete. Also looking forward to the Golden Saucer, at least as a side thing, I'll definitely run around it at first and explore it, giving all the games a try and seeing what is actually fun in there (hopefully everything). I do want to do the new dungeons as well.

But all these new things already have videos out there you can look up. Why do I need to see the same things again, only this time with perhaps different music and snippets of story cutscenes from the new content interposed at random times while showing things out of order.

I dunno, I don't need spoilers on what's going to happen on the story. What they have revealed so far in videos is more than enough to interest me in the new content and it doesn't spoil anything other than what particular areas look like from a panoramic view.

they are probably breaking up 2.5 into two parts just so people can't go through it in a day or two because it won't all be there. So now we have to wait another month for the rest of the update's content anyway.

Personally I am looking forward to 3.0 probably more than anything. 2.5 is just a minor prelude to the end of this initial part of the story, though I don't think it's really going to have any kind of finale to it. Not like any other MMORPG storyline. Which is fine I guess, but I kinda wish they had it all there from the start.

If they were to do a trailer to promote the game itself, while including things from all of the 2.0-2.5 it would be better than just using only 2.5 content to promote the game to new players. And then it wouldn't be a 2.5 trailer, but just a new trailer for FFXIV featuring 2.x content before 3.0.

At this point, with the expansion on the horizon that would make more sense to me as far as interesting new players to try the game. People who already play the game should already know what to expect by now, and should be able to keep themselves informed. It's not like SE hides it's plans for XIV until the very last second. Information about 2.5 has been trickling in for a while now, as well as information about 3.0.

What I hope for with 3.0 + is that they are able to slow down a bit with updates, while making sure that each new update truly adds a good wealth of content to a variety of the game's aspects. Meaning there will already be enough content to last a good several months before needing to introduce another update.

...Well, I'm tired. Gonna end here. Wanting 3.0, but will settle for more story from 2.5 and World of Darkness.

You do know that if they did it your way and just dumped a bunch of stuff in 1 big update then released another update 7-8 months later .... players will find a way to burn through ALL that content within 2-4 weeks then be stuck waiting 7 months for new content (and more than likely unsub until the next patch).

No thanks... I'd rather them keep it how it is now and give us 3-4 months between content and have us excited and coming back on a regular basis rather than taking 5-6 months off because we burned through everything.

SE has some smart people running the business for FFXIV. Because of the staggered content, people are less frequently un-subscribing, especially casual players who are JUST finishing up content just as a new patch is approaching... they don't even have a chance to un-subscribe for a break. That's how SE wants it, and I don't blame them.

My guess is that the trailer will come out on the 13th, marking it a week from the 20th. If not, then maybe the 15th, and if not, then the 16th. If not, then we can riot...

to put a long sentence short, from my time within game design we were taught one thing if your going to create a game that has a subscription or online basis you need to find a way to keep your audience and to return your audience every time, going with the 3 month window fits this game due to the content being beaten within the first week but is farmed and just as the game starts to get old even to those dedicated to it suddenly more content is released (2.4 being really slow for some due to being stuck on SCoB and fast for those who can do all the content,

but this was one way, the other would be to take all content we have gained since 2.1, (except very VERY minor stuff) and to put it all into a mega patch as 3.0 (heavens ward having no number in this path due to it being a expansion), heavens ward in this case would be a side thing and would just be known as heavenward no 3.0, until the major 4.0 major patch, but the issue is if we do this (taking the 3 months per patch) and assume 3.0 is going to have the same length then each major patch would be released (and majorly untested on the servers) every 12 to 15 months. within this time unless the game has a MAJOR amount go grinding or content the fans would unsub and leave come back for the major patch be overwelmed and leave, this dose work for some games (GW2 WoW ultima online) but not for games of FFXIV's nature,

also to continue the trailers themselves are NOT just for the players subscribed as i said before this is to be shown to new players who were interested in the game and want to see a update, as for the big trailer of everything that came before 3.0 they did this with 1.0 before 1.23e where the tag line if i remember was "play before the end" and it show cased all the major features of 1.0,

feather more, content that can be completed in a week will happen regardless, lets look at another MMO styled game with Raiding bitt in Bungies Destiny, within this MMOFPS, the Vault of Glass raid was beaten 2 weeks after launch and its expansion's raid was cleared within a week, the difficulty of these are extremely high to one mess up and the WHOLE thing is wiped, and started again from scratch, no matter how hard you make content it -WILL- be cleared and relatively fast, some people put down everything until they solve a puzzle.

the reason they have split 2.5 into 2 parts using my best guess is 1) to stop people from skipping over it as you said 2) to give a real sense of time passing and finally 3) as a means to pre-pair us for the trails of 2.55 (or 2.5p2) which will presumably have the final boss (a powerful trail) of 2.x

also as a final point do not assume everyone reads the live letters or researches everything to do with the updates, to use a phrase i learnt in my game design corse in college and my time in university when it comes to researching "some will most won't" when it comes to watching "most will some won't", basically meaning that if you gave someone a long book to read to find every fact or a video SHOWING them the facts they will choose the video while only a few will read the books.
