I'm sorry I think there's a difference between 'fearing change' and 'not particularly enjoying speed running'.

It's an interesting strategy.. but I'm afraid my only thought on reading this thread is 'Oh great now I'm going to get strong-armed into yet more rushing about every time I visit that dungeon'.

I tend to do Mage LB as soon as the second big cactuar spawn.
less stress for everyone, less mobs alive, less problems.

and the eventual melee can continue to dps the boss.
    profit.

Heh people talk about change when it comes to speed running... Speedrunning is boring to me, annoying to others, can be a pain for certain healers or certain tanks, can be amusing when the tank pulls the whole room with near 0 aoe potential etc...

If you want change... don't bring a tank... use titan egi - or not even that, go all healers and other fun stuff. But if you want or don't want a speedrun do speak up if someone asks. I hate it when people assume everyone wants it/doesn't want it.

I've tried the proposed strategy and it does work. However, it has its risks. Since your healer is busy kiting, they can screw up and get killed, or be unable to heal the tank/DPS as needed.

If you have at least 1 competent BLM in the party, there is a much less risky method to clearing this boss that I've used nearly ever time I run the dungeon. The tank gathers everything as it pops, DPS spam AoE (trash mobs die so fast and are just a nuisance if you leave them alive and/or kite), use single target on the boss when counting needles. Finally when the second large cactuar (Guardia) pops... Single target LB it (which should be easy since you killed all the adds), if you don't have or don't want to use single target LB, use the BLM one, it's more than enough. Finish off the Guardia quickly (if there's even any HP left), then burn the rest of the boss's health.

I tend to either run this dungeon on my WAR or my BLM, and my fiancée goes BLM every time. With both methods we can absolutely wreck this boss, but with the "healer kite" method it can be risky if we're relying on a player we don't know. With the "engulf everything in unholy flame" method, we know we will never screw it up as it relies only on DPS.

I'm sorry, but as a tank, there is something inherent inside me that finds deliberately putting the healer in danger like this just to shave a few seconds off the run completely wrong. If somethings fouls up, and the healer dies, the party wipes, and more time ends up being wasted. Sure, It's risk vs reward, but the reward seems trifling compared to the risk involved.

And yes, even as a tank, I absolutely despise this speedrunning mentality that has overtaken the community. All I ever see these days is "Faster! Faster! Faster! Me! Me! Me! MEEEEEE!"

Why are some tanks so resilient to adapt to the parties skill and comfort level?

have you done your zodiac yet? if you have not, wait until you have to run the same dungeon over and over and over again, up to 120 times to get one drop. Now image doing that at 30m a clip, wouldent you want it to go a tad bit faster?

again i only cared about that method because i was running dungeons for zodiac and it tends to get pretty boring pretty fast

For me, I'm doing zodiac as tank, hence getting light on my novus, i do big pull method in another reason than clipping time, but for completely amusement to get the challenge on big pulls, and no.. I'm not very lucky.. I need to do haukke manor like 30++ till i get my drop.. I dont do big pulls if i see the other party members arent capable..
It's just people dont really have patience with progress and pour the weight on other people..

If i ask you fellow tanks, how many of yous have done 4 set mobs pulling at the start and end of stone vigil hard mode? Because not many healers, tanks, or DPS are capable on such thing, then is it a good idea to clip and do them big pull to shave couple of mins?

well obviously if the group cant handle big pulls or speed runs thats fine, im not gonna ditch em. I am talking about when i get into a DF with all Ilvl100+ people. Hell, i have had people uncomfortable letting the healer do the tanking even after i tell them that the healer happens to be my wife whos ilvl118 and has done it plenty of times
