These are just some ideas I had as an alternative method of advancing in a craft instead of the current grind.
For the ones that can be implemented now, given the current content of the game:
Have people run repair Guildleves (preferably Quests), which involve repairing or maintenance various structures in cities and at camps that reward SP as you go.
***Have some kind of change in the model, or the texture that clearly shows what needs to be worked on (no more sparkly things)***
For example, "Sections of the floor in -location- has aged much over the years, it needs to be refurbished" Then you receive the items you need to complete the task just like how some of the crafting Guildleves go. Now lets say if you where a carpenter, you would use ash lumber or something else similar related to the craft. This would have to be meaningful though, no less then 10 'nodes' or interaction points that would need to be finished (more SP this way).
***please have different animations for crafting during these, how about standing while crafting, like hammering a 2x4 in a wall or something***
If you where a goldsmith, repair 'rusting' decorations around the cities.
Now, I haven't done much with crafting and its not helping much with giving more ideas for this concept.
Another thing I have to stress though, please make some system that allows others to see what you have accomplished. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING more gratifying being a crafter than for others to see and maybe even comment on your efforts. I'm not sure on many things that can be done to implement these things, this post is primarily concerned with expanding on with others.
At the moment I have no more ideas to be adopted with current content, any ideas?
However for future content, I would like to see more of a style that EVE Online has for with production and logistics. In EVE Online, your never actually safe, anyone can attack anyone at any given time (though, there are repercussions). For FFXIV, an ever constant danger with beast men or perhaps even the undead or wolves that run around in packs patrolling the area. Build barricades in camps or maybe a watch tower and be sure for a need of maintenance (they can be damaged and broken). Have crafters be able to repair these structures with their own supplies and be rewarded for succeeding with SP. There would need a system to be in place so that way people can't just repair anything all at once. Maybe even have a series of durability bars so people know what craft is needed.
For Behests, have monsters attack you in waves that way these structures get damaged. If these structures get destroyed, have crafters party up and make a new one. Have a structure be built in sections. When a section is built, lets say part of a watch tower, grant more of a generous amount of SP. This would benefit gatherers as well as help stimulate the market, give more incentives for crafting and gathering. One of the many things EVE's market system works so well is because all of the items are consumable or destroyable.
Wow I went off topic, sorry guys but I felt that needed to be said to
This has some rough edges though, I am not seeing much with availability with weaving, tanning or cooking. Any Ideas?
One more thing, with the given mini-game that exists, the grind will never really feel truly removed. Some people would rather have there character just do it all themselves. I propose, also a simpler method, enable us to craft more then 1 item at a time. Its not fun doing the same synthesis over and over again 100+ times just for 1 rank.
