Please read the IGN article you linked to properly, I have already posted on this and ignoring my post makes me sad. All the information in that IGN article is quoted from the report, nothing was said THIS week, it was a quote from a report written in March. Who knows what the current subs count is, I don't care, it's not important. I just want people to get their facts straight and understand that people's biggest complaint in this thread is that Polygon and IGN were making it sound like the report was written in December -- which Polygon went on to correct after receiving such complaints towards their article.

Why on God's green earth would multiple sources put out articles this week on information from 9 months ago. Answer: they would not. SE released their "2014 annual report" this week as he said. Here is the link to it:

There are dozens of articles in the gaming and business environment covering the release. All you had to do was look it up. One of them even starts with... "On January 1, 2015, Square Enix has released the annual report, which covers financial and corporate details from the past year and then toward 2015 plans."

So yes some of the numbers are from the year ending March 2014. However, the report is from this week and also covers 2014 information (before and after March) and 2015 plans, so no one know when the subscription numbers are from because he doesn't specify, and it doesn't directly reference it in the report. Additionally, Matsuda's quotes were from a letter this week in conjunction with the release of this report (pictured in one of the articles I linked).

You do understand that FFXIV is what you would be able to relatively call a niche MMORPG? Most of the ppl that i know and who are in gaming haven't even heard about it.
Still if you consider that they have 1mil subscribers across all these games. Let's say even if 1/3 is FFXIV. so ~330k. each paying 10+eur per month so they get nearly 4mil euros per month from the game(+original games sales +cash shop). Ofc that is not all clean profit as there are development expenses and server maintenance etc. But i imagine they still make sweet money out of it.

And yeah. at the end of the source it says its relatively old news.

I like how they just now published numbers for a year that ended in March last year, hence they're really 2013 numbers, typical SE doing things all backwards, if anything it's bad investor reporting though Polygon are equally bad on their own. Anyway, I doubt the numbers will massively change at all, it's no surprise the game doesn't have nearly close to 1 million real subs as some people have already guesstimated how many actual active subs the game has, the 2.5 million "adventurers" numbers was always just PR spin on registered accounts.

The cash shop is the perfect sign of this, usually when WoW clone MMOs such as ARR start under performing and not retaining enough subs, they push the F2P cash shop panic button. No, this game will never ever pull a WoW and maintain both a cash shop and a sub for an extended period of time i.e. more than a year, it's really silly to believe that.
