I like how some suggestions are "go play other games" while you've already payed for a sub. Anyway the game really doesn't have a lot to do each patch, just two repeatable things and one of them is weekly locked and I guess the overtly rehashed relic quest of the patch. So even if you do catch up before 3.0 you'll only have Shiva and Final Coil worth doing, and the last one only if you manage to find a static or a PF group. So you could still catch up and prepare right now for 3.0, but 3.0 will also let you catch up even faster.

The thing though, is by then all this old content will probably be even more dead, depending on how they handle old content. So sadly with the game's WoW design it's only worth doing content in its prime before everyone moves on to the next shiny treadmill. You also already missed about two months worth of poetics, which is about the whole left side and 3 accessories.

The only real advantage about being caught up for 3.0, using the 1.0 to ARR transition as the closest reference we have, is that you'll have a higher chance to do Alexander on the first week or two after it released, and I guess you'll have an easier time getting those extra 10 levels to the new level cap. The other only advantage is you won't have to wait 2 hours or even more to do most old content, using Ultima Weapon and CT 1 as an example of content that's deader than dead because there's no real reason to do it right now. This also depends on how they handle old content by either removing set party requirements to even queue for them i.e. be able to enter with less than 8 people and maybe even solo and have a chance to beat it at level 60, or with the GC squad system they mentioned.
