From my experience as tank you should try to have best equip possible!
I dont say its a must, but it makes your life much much easier...
From 1-45 NPCs are selling gear, there is no excuse to wear lvl 25 gloves as lvl 45 character!

I don't know if I should first try to buy what I can, or progress some more and keep running dungeons.

Keep on buying from NPC while doing those dungeons you feel you can handle, when hitting level 50 (well at level 45 it begins) complete the jobquest to get a nice starter set of gear for free!
With that gear it should be possible to do most dungeons, but dont try titan HM...
Crystal Tower as OFF tank can get you some gear progress if you are unlucky with the drops from dungeons (other players can help completing the content -> in dungeons when tank wipe = mostly group wipe)...
Starting with CT, continue with ST and so on... while progressing with gear get some training in dungeons but dont overdo it, some dungeons are not as easy as they seem...

Forgotten: Right side of gear is nice, but not the main focus! Do not spend all gil in expensive rings or such... keep on focusing jobquests -> story -> crystal tower

Yes, I am tremendously undergeared for my level, but my left side items are ilvl35+ and level sync into the dungeon.

• WRONG. LEVEL SYNC means your gear that is FOUR LEVELS OR MORE ABOVE THE DUNGEON'S GEAR WILL BE SCALED DOWN. Not up. Meaning you do high level dungeons with gear appropriate for a Lv25-30 dungeon at best lol

The only rings I can find on the MB give measly stats, at huge prices. Should I keep spamming low-level roulettes until I get enough soldiery tomes? Farm DD/brayflox/AK/whatever in hopes of getting drops?

• You need to go hunt the side quest at your level and do them to get appropriate gear. You can also do LEVE quests, available from LEVEMETES, you get 3 Allowances per 12 hours (real time).
• I would save those to level up an alt class AFTER YOU DING 50 (fotr thepermanent +50% bonus XP) but your case seems more urgent. You can see BEFORE ACCEPTING LEVES what gear reward you can earn.
• In addition for some chest spawning IN THE AREA of your Leve quest, which will half of the time be either a potion/ether/X potion etc OR Aetherial gear, the same as in dungeon, but of the level of the quest. Those have STR + VIT and one, two OR three stats, randomly chosen among DEX, DET, CRIT, ACC.

• By the way Soldiery gear is for LEVEL 50. You can't equip it under that level. You should upgrade ALL YOUR GEAR to iLV45+ not only get rings xD

How do I keep ninjas from stealing my aggro? I know Provoke doesn't actually build enmity, it just puts you on top for some amount of time, right? My enmity bar was just as full as DPS, both of us had full bars, DPS said "A" and mine said "2". I hit Provoke, then Flash right under the boss, and Shield Lob, but I didn't see the color go red for even a split second!

• Correct, Provoke only puts you just above the highest enmity/threat/aggro person. If your gear is so low or if you do nothing after, of course the dps or healer will steal aggro right afterwards...

Unfortunately, all end game (and most content) are locked behind the main quest.

Specifically for Provoke:

Provoke puts you to the top of the enmity/hate/aggro list +1, it generates nothing for you and can actually be detrimental if you use it on a mob that you have secured enmity on. It can actually lower your enmity down to +1 of say the ninja who was in the #2 position on the enmity list, so as soon as he gets a big hit in you have to fight for it back.

In essence, only use Provoke when you lose hate on a mob so you can get it back. One very good use is; say you get killed by a boss and immediately are raised by the healer or summoner, you use provoke to put yourself at the top of the list again.

Doing levequests is a good idea. Maybe even consider leveling up some crafters or gatherers. Probably better to level the latter first. You can make some good gil from simply selling everything you get from leveling them.

So yeah, since you are lvl48, just do your job quests and get an almost full set of lvl 45 main pieces for free...

Buy a weapon though. Your Grand Company probably has a decent one if you don't wanna spend Gil.

Just get some cheap rings off of the market, even level 20-30 ones will do until you're 50.

Regarding losing aggro to Ninjas, looking at your Lodestone, your weapon is a lvl 38 one, you should definitely upgrade to one closer to your actual level, since the higher your dmg, the more aggro you pull.

Yeah the aggro you output is based upon the quantity of damage you deal, or healing you heal (for healers). For tanks, you got some stance (Shield Oath / Defiance) which increases you aggro generated ONTOP of your skills that already have a coefficient.

Thus, upgrading your WEAPON will be the most beneficial. 1 Weapon DPS is worth more than several points of STR which in turn is worth more than ACC (till you stop missing) > DET I guess > Crit (cause screw RNG). Parry is useless to increase your damage / enmity

You can find cheap items on the market boards, most of the time it's people buying from NPC vendors 10 or more times higher to make a profit off newbies.

Check here for a list of items you can acces from vendors, quest rewards, dungeon drops, leve chest rewards, etc..

I JUST REMEMBERED that you got free Lv50 blue class gear from your class trainer at LV45.... Which makes me wonder, did you even do your class quests up till now?

Heck if you even skipped those, no wonder you only got half your gear and most of it for lv15-25...

Also, being level 47 you should already have done your lv 45 job quest that would give you lv 45 gear

My main story is actually at level 38, and I'm intentionally staying on the MSQ to avoid unlocking harder instances until I catch up. I was leveling very slowly until a week or so ago, when I just recently discovered the magical roulettes, which give 150-200k EXP daily. When you add in Challenge Log with 120k for both dungeon challenges, 140k for FATEs, even 50k for commendations... I basically gained 10 levels without a single quest. You can gain half a level a day or more... I might even be level 50 by Saturday.

update: amber ring is on MB for 5,500 gil, Vitality +6, Parry +10. might just get two of those, since I've been hearing that VIT (Max HP) is what tanks need to focus on the most.

Vitality and parry ain't gonna increase your aggro.

Skiping quests and doing only xp rewarding grinding is why your gear sucks major balls

YOU SHOULD NOT GRIND FOR XP at your first class. Just do the main quest + class quest over everything else. Then your daily ONE TIME low level roulette. Then do side quests for more gear rewards.

Then do your hunting log, guild hests. MAYBE FATES. Maybe Leves.

You should do your job quests. Equip the lvl45 AF pieces and get a lvl44 GC chest piece. The Storm and Flame FC shops have some ACC that can be used for a tank, but you can only use one GC shop, so if you're with twin adders, you're kind of lucked out.
