Any gear above i45 starts giving a chance to obtain Grade IV Materia. The higher the iLvl of the Spiritbound gear, the higher the chance of obtaining a Grade IV. Just put on the highest iLvl stuff you can easily obtain and go nuts!

Oh thank you friend +_+ well... i will try Militia set with BRD... i see a lot of BRD doing with this IL55 set lol

Item Lv - % chance of converting into Rank I / II / III / IV Materia:
1-14: 100 / 0 / 0 / 0
15-29: 90 / 10 / 0 / 0
30-44: 0 / 90 / 10 / 0
45-60: 0 / 0 / 90 / 10
60-70: 0 / 0 / 15 / 85
70+: 0 / 0 / 0 / 100
Those should be decently accurate. Note that the higher your iLV gear the longer it takes for 100% spiritbond. It takes 2 or 3 times to spiritbond to 100% gear lv70+ compared to lv45-50 lol

This is bullsh*t. Don't believe this.Item Lv - % chance of converting into Rank I / II / III / IV Materia:

15-29: 90 / 10 / 0 / 0

I spiritbonded 6 pieces of i90 gear. And only ONE turned into a IV.

Everything above i45 has a chance to drop IV's, but there is no full-proof way of getting IV's. If you have the mats and can make the i90 stuff yourself, you can spiritbond it in two expert mode dungeons with 2 materia's in each piece.
If you don't have that, I'd go with i70 crafted which can be spiritbonded in a couple turn 4 coil runs. I've heard people have more success with that gear than anything else.
And of course there is the i55 gear, but to me that takes too long to spiritbond since nobody does those lower 50 dungeons anymore.

This is outdated. I think since 2.2 (the patch that brought the alexandrite sphere scroll ingame)Item Lv - % chance of converting into Rank I / II / III / IV Materia:
1-14: 100 / 0 / 0 / 0
15-29: 90 / 10 / 0 / 0
30-44: 0 / 90 / 10 / 0
45-60: 0 / 0 / 90 / 10

Why shouldn't tier IV materia be 100% on much more expensive equipment that takes much longer to spiritbind? It's not as though tier IV materia is or should be some ultra rare item. It's completely required to participate in high level crafting and gathering as well as necessary to make crafted combat gear relevant. It should take more time/ money/ effort than tier III materia, sure, but the current ratio is ridiculous and has had the unintended effect of drastically increasing the supply of tier III materia such that in a lot of cases it's cheaper than tier II.
Sorry, on topic. OP, I've always found that using level 45 equipment is as good as you can do. Anything 45-55 has the same chance of converting to tier IV, but 45 will SB much faster (I think about 50% faster in Urth's gift), is cheaper to produce, and easier to HQ if you're making it yourself and not a geared up crafter. Basically use the lowest ilvl equipment that you can that is 45+. This will probbaly be in the 45-50 range. To me ilvl 55 gear is just not worth it.
