You know: Lightning Returns Event... no, no connection at all
Or lets say, if there is no dimensional rift somewhere!

a fucked up justification that would not really be feasible with FFxii though. Noone in Ivalice that I know of has the the power to travel through dimensions or through the void.
Lightning got somehow this power, shantotto (or whatever the spelling is) invented dimensional travel, and Gilgamesh was sent into the void in his own game.
The only total BS direct reference I can think of is Ultros, who doesn't have any reason to come here. Yeah they can justify it by "it's an other Ultros in an other world with the exact same design and exact same friend Chuppon" but well...
side note : The fight and Hildibrand story behind Ultros is really fun and cool. It's just that his presence here doesn't make any sense

You mean like how Odin is in the game with the exact same horse Sleipnir and the exact same sword Zantetsuken?![]()
A true paladin... will sheathe his sword.

i guess what I mean is that characters like Odin get a pass when they're almost identical in every Final Fantasy (but with different lore explanations as to why they exist), why doesn't Ultros? Because he isn't a primal?

well, sort of.
Primals in FFxiv are (except the incomming Ravanah) primals or summons in other FFs. Thus even though they may be straight ripped of their original games, they still fit it pretty well as they still remain summons.
However, Ultros is just a comical character. Recurring boss in his own game, he made a few appearances in other games but mostly only in name (FFX and FFXII come in mind. He's also in FF1's remake on GBA in an optional dungeon featuring bosses from the other games and a DLC in FFXIII-2 iirc). But he isn't a summon, thus he should have no reason to be as he is in FFVI in FFXIV.
Not that I mind he did, but there was no solid reason for it.

Ultros is not the only thing... Bosses like "Demon Wall", "Amon", "Cloud of Darkness", the upcoming Bismarck (which wasnt a "primal"/summon in any FF) etc. are just references to Final Fantasy titles.. and non boss elements also like Gold Saucer which is a reference to FF7.
They try to make a whole Final Fantasy theme park full of references in Final Fantasy 14 Online. FF14 Online being the "ultimative" FF experience.
Some gameplay mechanics or user interface ideas are also taken from FF12 btw
like these blue and red "target" lines:
and the blue dots at the end of each zone:
as there have been plenty suggestions from players of 1.0. version how to improve the game and make it more feel like a Final Fantasy. Gold Saucer being just one of it.
So what we get now in ARR you have to thank many players of 1.0. for their suggestions as well![]()
