I'm pretty sure that if Amazon was hit, Sony would probably be likely unable to prevent it either. Same goes for Microsoft and other big companies. You can't prevent DDoS attacks, nor can you prepare for them either. Unless you know the exact amount that they are planning to use, it's probably almost impossible to prevent (because of the ever-expanding methods of DDoSing). Fixing the issue isn't going to be easy either and may take a long time since they have to filter the IPs bombarding the servers with endless queries and requests.

I know comparing Sony to Amazon is like comparing apples to oranges I know Sony is irrelevant to Amazon, I was just trying to be nice and inform people as they might want to consider changing their passwords as their information may have been compromised. I'm not debating IT issues and DDOS attacks in this thread as people are trying to draw me into that it seems. That's not what the purpose of this thread is and I've already said my piece.

What we need is laws to regulate this kind of virtual crime. I'm quite sure it's easy for government agencies to track down the perpetrators, but then what? What kind of laws could be used against their crimes done in a virtual field? I'm not talking about anything like SOPA, but something on the lines of "if you steal money on the internet you answer for it like you've stolen money in the real world". It's simple. But try to do something like that and all the Anon kiddies will rally and use their haxxor powers to sabotage any atempt. They're not fighting for freedom when they use their skills to censor anybody who talk against them or have different point of views.

On a side note, according to this article from Bussiness Inside (http://www.businessinsider.com/why-h...etwork-2014-12), seems like SoE did indeed upgrade their security. But I think any company can protect themselves just so much against people that fear no punishment... simply because none will come. In fact, they only get rewards, vide what megaupload's owner did.

And they'e doing "for the lulz". Seriously.

Then word your post properly. The way you worded it implies otherwise - contradictory to what you've just said. The subject of the DDoS attacks are relevant to this topic as it is the cause of the downtime which is what the topic is about. So, I suggest you don't point fingers at anyone. One cannot simply fix hacking by upgrading their security and servers, nor can they prepare for new attacks. It only serves to slow them down. These attacks are ever-evolving, and likely not going to be easily resolved with a simple flick of the wrist, I'm afraid. :/

    Use Secure authentication Protocals

Since SE and Sony insist on our end being secure why not do the same on their end. just initiate the same protocol as the banks, (https) or encrypted email protocol. We are talking about financial transactions as we are paying subscription fees for both services. This way they could filter out erroneous isp and ip addresses and allow the legit customers in the door. Would not stop a Ddos attack but would help them shut it down faster and more efficiently. Also would make them accountable to services with minimal financial impact on them. win/win

You can't prevent DDoS attacks but LizardSquad said in last septembre that their next attack will be for Christmas. They knew an attack was coming. They basically did nothing to prevent it.

Is there something that could be done? Not being sarcastic. I'm serious. How do you prevent a DDOS attack, even if you know it's coming?

Up the bandswitch? Hire better programers? It's basically what LizardSquad said "your networks suck, and we'll prove it". They told that back in september, planning their attack for Christmas, and guess what now?

Does that actually work, or is that just a guess? Is there some absolute way to guarantee you will not be the victim of a DDOS attack?

There's always escalation. Cops carry guns, the crooks carry guns. Copy wear bulletproof vest, the crooks use armor piercing rounds. Every means of protection just ups the game on the other end.
