It IS Sony's fault though. Sony has been attacked at least twice these last couple of years. Remember last year or the year before when the psn was down for at least a month because there was a loss of usernames, passwords, email info, and account information on a gross scale for MILLIONS of users? This group warned them that they were going to bring the network down for Christmas a month in advance and they still didn't bring their equipment up to the level it needs to be for it to protect its users and still allow for people to consistently log in and use their services....and guess what? Anon hacked psn, Amazon, and some others today, leaking usernames and passwords, I'm assuming during this downtime SONY has had or has been having. Sony hasn't even had the balls to announce THAT yet http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...s-9946391.html

So they kept us in the dark for a week as to what really happened last year with the credit card information that was leaked for millions of users after the initial hack (while our bank information was compromised), these last few days as to what is happening with the network and why it still continues to remain down, and now with this recent release of yet more usernames and passwords and people continue to victimize Sony themselves, and not us, the people who have to lose out on our FFXIV subs who play on ps4, the people who can't use their new ps4's for 3 days during Christmas, and the people who pay daily for the ps+ service. Why on Earth do people continue to claim Sony is the victim in this? This company makes billions each year out of sheer profit, and instead of reinvesting that money towards the security of their clients and customers they continue to be lazy and reap the profits at the expense of other's security and welfare.

Here is a real world analogy of what happened. Lets say there is a Sony building customers can go in this building through the many doors. A group says 1 month in advance we are going to attack Sony's building so nobody can get in to play games. 1 month later the group shows up with 2 million people stands in front of all the doors in the building so customers can't get in. Now you tell me how is Sony suppose to stop that attack?

It takes them a very long process to filter out all the millions of IPs that are spamming their PSN servers.

I already know what Direct Denial of Service attacks are in addition to how they work, thank you. I'm not in IT but I have family with an extensive background in it whom I have conversed with about it. With the right tools and technology, DDOS attacks can be dealt with and their effects mitigated: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/product...d8011e927.html

    PlayStation Network Update

Catherine Jensen's Avatar + Posted by Catherine Jensen on Dec 27, 2014 // VP, SCEA Consumer Experience

The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours. PSN engineers are working hard to restore full network access and online gameplay as quickly as possible. From time to time there may be disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but our engineers will be working to restore service as quickly as possible.

If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console. We’ll continue to keep you posted on Twitter at @AskPlayStation and we’ll update this post once the problems subside.

    Thanks again for your patience.

I'm pretty sure that if Amazon was hit, Sony would probably be likely unable to prevent it either. Same goes for Microsoft and other big companies. You can't prevent DDoS attacks, nor can you prepare for them either. Unless you know the exact amount that they are planning to use, it's probably almost impossible to prevent (because of the ever-expanding methods of DDoSing). Fixing the issue isn't going to be easy either and may take a long time since they have to filter the IPs bombarding the servers with endless queries and requests.

I know comparing Sony to Amazon is like comparing apples to oranges I know Sony is irrelevant to Amazon, I was just trying to be nice and inform people as they might want to consider changing their passwords as their information may have been compromised. I'm not debating IT issues and DDOS attacks in this thread as people are trying to draw me into that it seems. That's not what the purpose of this thread is and I've already said my piece.

Then word your post properly. The way you worded it implies otherwise - contradictory to what you've just said. The subject of the DDoS attacks are relevant to this topic as it is the cause of the downtime which is what the topic is about. So, I suggest you don't point fingers at anyone. One cannot simply fix hacking by upgrading their security and servers, nor can they prepare for new attacks. It only serves to slow them down. These attacks are ever-evolving, and likely not going to be easily resolved with a simple flick of the wrist, I'm afraid. :/

    Use Secure authentication Protocals

Since SE and Sony insist on our end being secure why not do the same on their end. just initiate the same protocol as the banks, (https) or encrypted email protocol. We are talking about financial transactions as we are paying subscription fees for both services. This way they could filter out erroneous isp and ip addresses and allow the legit customers in the door. Would not stop a Ddos attack but would help them shut it down faster and more efficiently. Also would make them accountable to services with minimal financial impact on them. win/win

Debating how or if its possible to prevent them isn't though...unless I misread the wording of the title of this thread? The only person who has an issue with me here is you. I'm not looking to argue with anyone :/ Arguing doesn't solve anything, its not constructive, and it doesn't make me feel better either. I wish I could say the same for everyone else, though. You have a nice day

Also, I've yet to try logging on since people are saying its coming up again. The psn down time thing is usually late to update though. Hopefully its happy gaming from here on out, peeps!

It is. A discussion evolves over time and there is no one absolute when it come to it especially with the forums as long as the discussion still pertains or is related to the subject (in this case PSN being down and the DDoS attacks). No, I do not have an issue with you, rather, I'm merely telling you to not point fingers at anyone. The way you worded your post implies as such. Though, I don't think it was intentional from the looks of it, so apologies if it looks like I'm bashing you. You have a nice day too.

Anyway, it looks like PSN is slowly coming up for a lot of people (not everyone though), so it should probably be back up soon, hopefully.

Pretty much nothing. Unless you magically find out how large the attack is going to be, it's almost impossible. You can attempt to use services that redirect the attacks, but those hackers are not stupid and can find another path to attack the servers. Either that or they improve their attack to the point where it gets too large that their 'improved servers' can't handle it. By the looks of things, the servers should probably be up soon as more and more people seem to be able to get back on. Still trying on mine, but it isn't working. :/
