Or, keeping with the subject of Final Fantasy. "Right and wrong aren't what seperate us and our enemies. It is our different standoints, our perspectives that separate us." - Squall Leonhart
Course, as a Mercenary, that is a very convenient way of looking at morality, seeing as I imagine Norg would be a little upset if they limited their potential clientel to people they decided were morally righteous.
tbh I hardly meet players that are rude. There are many randoms that are quiet and won't say a word but I won't consider that rude.
in fact playing numerous other online games, this is one of the nicer communities I met, you even have randoms shout for B ranks when they pass them by, how cool is that?
Maybe I am just lucky but this is my experience on this subject. As for game-lore wise, this is an online game, with many people with different tastes in fashion and themes. That's why the selection of armor should be high, to let any player find the pieces he likes. Else that'd turn off more players if there was online one theme for armors.
As for dark knight - we still don't know the story and lore behind it. But most certainly it will be connected to the lore currently in game and it will all make sense to you once its released.
What if I rather be bad?
That's your choice, but it does go against the story and structure of the game, so perhaps you might enjoy a game that allows you to take on that role, more than one that does not. I am NOT saying you should go play something else, nor that you should modify how you play, those are your personal decisions, it's just that this game does not support players taking that role.
The story campaign leaves little space for the design of your RP character. Or more, the story campaign is completely independent from us, and we are just a silent observer, like Chrono. Speaking Chrono, I prefer in a role-play ambivalent characters, as Magus, for example. Or David Xanathos in Disney's "Gargoyles" (an unusually adult series, just for the Disney-90s). There is no need to puke a rainbow to be a hero. Unless your name is Sailor Moon. That's your choice, but it does go against the story and structure of the game, so perhaps you might enjoy a game that allows you to take on that role, more than one that does not. I don't disagree but... Reality is subjective to every individual. While I would say there are certainly douche bag players here, they are the least common denominator. Focusing on that and them creates a reality of that. (What we think, we become)
Instead of talking about how terrible the terrible people are why not talk about how helpful the helpful and nice people are. Acknowledging these things would be the first step to making a better community. Square doesn't make the community, we do and we are responsible for it. A large portion of posts on this forum are people complaining and talking about how bad this or that was. This post is no exception. If you want the community to change for the positive you have to be a link in that chain or you are ultimately working against your own goal.
The bulk of people in this game are genuinely helpful and nice. Acknowledging that would go a long way as opposed to focusing on the negatives.
I like to pretend in cutscenes that Minfillia and everyone around us who are our 'friends' are secretly using us. Every compliment is actually an insult, but our characters are so socially inept we can't pick up on it. So we just nod.
"Najara, you're the best! We couldn't have done it without you." Yah bitch. You made me do everything, actually, so f*** you.
Also with the 2.4 Shiva patch everything is questionable.
Also I just read the OP and I realize nothing I just said is relevent. Oh well,

I use darkness to fight darkness because why not? They will not see it coming.
