Amazingly enough both WoW and Tera manage to support freely scalable UIs, which means resolution is irrelevant. 720p, 1080p, 4K, 8K, 16K, Holodeck, it doesn't matter. The UI will be the same size no matter what resolution you pick, because it's based on relative size to the screen and not absolute size to the number of pixels. In fact almost all games with a sane UI design are able to implement this quite simply, which makes it more baffling how Squenix managed to design an MMO client in 2013 which had all UI elements in an absolute pixel size.

Maybe it's because of the console problem. Due to the game existing on PS3 and PS4, it was probably developed with a maximum resolution of 1080p in mind the entire time. It's easier to create parity across multiple systems, especially for a game this big, than it is to add special features for the PC version.

Although, the real issue is attempting to use a computer monitor sized screen for 4k in the first place. What's the point of having all that resolution if you just upscale everything anyway?

Honestly, you really just need to see it for yourself. The only thing that needs up scaling is UI. The graphics itself are just so much better just by having higher resolution. If you run 1080 and look at the edges of characters you can tell there is a lot of little pixelated edges and anti- aliasing only blurs it a bit. 4k literally makes it so there are so many pixels that you can't even tell where the pixels are unless of course you put your eye against the monitor in which case I would feel sorry for your eyes :P. It all just makes the game look waaaay better. Also higher resolution doesn't mean if you up scale something to the size it would be on a 1080 monitor it will look the same. It will still look crisp and better no matter what angle you look at it.

Then maybe I just have bad eyes because I run it at native resolution(1680x1050, so not quite 1080p, but still native to the monitor) with FXAA turned off and I see no problems with aliasing.
