Hi guys, I've been thinking lately about changing a race (got tired of being a lala). I'm not sure if I should just use the fantasia potion to change the race or make a new character. Are there any major cons to make an alt?

The only con for race change is one or two stats shifting due to racial stats. Otherwise, not really. Race makes little to no difference no matter what anyone says.
As for the alt, if you ever intend to use Entry instead of Subscription to play Final Fantasy XIV i think that alt will prevent you since Entry accounts only get one character per server. That is all that an alt will interfere with.

- You'll have to progress through everything again.
- You can't directly send things to your alt.
- You'll have to switch character every time you want to play the other character.
Just to name the ones that I can come up with off the top of my head.
That said, there are plenty of benefits from it as well. Not going to list them though!
The biggest pain I found with having an alt is having to cap tomes on both of them, which gets tiresome after a while. If you're planning on just sticking with the alt you make as your only character, then just be prepared to have to regear and be behind for a while.
Tomes are the only annoying daily I do on my alt, as I gear both my main and alt for FCoB. The benefits are definitely there though.
1) Being able to gear multiple jobs with lockout gear.
2) Experiencing endgame content with multiple jobs.
3) Diversifying your experience with a difference race, sex, affiliation.
4) Certain financial benefits (Ixali dailies come to mind).
Really, it comes down to how much time you want to invest. Getting a fresh character through the main story and to level 50 will take about a week, and gearing it to 110 will take another. Capping tomes on 2 characters means 12 dungeons per week of exp roulette, if you do nothing outside that. It becomes a lot work after awhile.
I have many alts for roleplay purposes and getting them to 50 is just so they have access to all gear for glamouring. I do have a level 50 tank with this method. Making an alt makes it less boring to grind up a different classes because you still have quests to do and aren't just grinding repeatable leve quests or fates or dungeons. You also don't have to pay more than you are to get fantasias to swap things around if you find you don't like something.

While we're on the topic of alts...
I'm debating whether or not to get involved with trade skills on my main character (I still have a ways to go with him...) or, making an alt who explores that part of the game. I'm not entirely sold on the idea, and I probably should just find time to sit down on my main and really organize his inventory. But is the idea of a craft-only alt ridiculous?
I have a main that I plow through things with.
1st Alt, is one I'm simply gearing as the game intended, so any tomes I get I just keep, and spend, but I don't use the armor until I'm at the level where I can use it.
2nd Alt, is to go through the storyline, and all quests and actually read every-single little thing. I love it.
What I have learned:
1. Don't try to do everything on both.
2. It was a great social experiment (unexpected)
3. I found out that Chocobo porters are amazing!
4. You can meet new people, and make new friends (Just be upfront about it being an Alt)
5. Also one thing I do, personal choice, when it comes to the end game dungeons, in order not to be flamed or yelled at, create a party finder group and state that your low iLevel. People are really nice and it fills up surprisingly fast (in my experience).
6. It was fun, and I do not regret having any of my alts.

I am a winner, even though I sometimes fail.
I have 5 accounts with 4 of my "Sisters" being on the same world. I did this to experience differant classes/Jobs and trades without having to worry about inventory space. I also did this because in the earlier stages of this game I found it very easy to run out of gil. Mobs didnt drop gil in dfs and we didnt have roulettes to pad our pocket books. I still play my other sister's but I dont cap tomes for all them.
