As long as I will be kept alive, you can do whatever you want. Dps, dancing Nyan-Nyan, Macarena or Manderville, alt-tabbing your stuff, whatever is fine.

I always DPS as Scholar when the situation permits. As long as everyone's alive, I don't see any point in berating a healer for DPS'ing. Holy's stun is actually damn nice in trash pulls cause it cuts down on annoying AOE's that make the tank have to pull the mobs all over the place to dodge.
Love the sounds of Holy going off when it decimates the mobs. xD I always respect the healer who can DPS and Heal. Can't believe someone would kick a healer for Helping. Must have felt stupid waiting there for another healer right before the last boss.

Honestly, they probably had a friend/FC mate waiting to take their place and were looking for an excuse to kick. Otherwise, I can't fathom why someone would be so stupid as to turn down extra DPS from the healer.
Never underestimate stupidity ^_^
When I was Nexus light farming, running Mog HM in DF, 2nd phase killed, WHM, BLM, PLD, Archer then nuked boss down, one player went off saying it was the worst group ever! Because we didn't follow Mr Happys guide to the letter (lol) and cleared it with zero deaths very fast. Yet it still went on a tantrum XD t'was funny.
Or players selecting a language they dont understand for DF coil then getting all stroppy because no-one can tell em what to do in their language.
As I said, never underestimate stupidity with people. XD

If a healer was just meant to heal, why have DPS actions?

It's a hold over from CNJ's original form in version 1.0 - in it's original incarnation (this is before Jobs were added) it was more an elemental spell caster and less of a healer. When the Job system was added CNJ lost most of it's elemental spells which were given to THM and it was made to concentrate more on healing to compensate for being the stepping stone to WHM, but still retained earth, water and wind elemental DD spells as those elements also fitted with the healing spells they cast (for instance, how many people realize Cure is a water spell?). But I digress...
I hate to play devil's advocate here, but I can kind of sympathize with the BRD mentioned by the OP in principle. If I wanted to play DD I'd go as a DD class or Job, not pretend WHM can be a DD and neglect the whole reason I'm even there and potentially pull more hate than the tank can get off me.
However, having said that, if a player is particularly skilled at being able to switch between DD and healing, then go for it. My gripe is this attitude that it's actually expected, when it shouldn't be. It would be like expecting me as PLD to just DD and not bother tanking. If you want to deal damage, go as a DD class, it's that simple.

I always thought it was wind, hehe.
On that note, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you doing some damage as the healer, so long as you kept everyone up as well, if you were having trouble juggling both, then I can see them getting mad, but from what you say that wasn't the case, so yeah, they were just dumb.
1) It has nothing to do with what there was or wasn't in 1.0. Classes/jobs were shredded and completely reworked. Every job has dps abilities because of:It's a hold over from CNJ's original form in version 1.0 - in it's original incarnation (this is before Jobs were added) it was more an elemental spell caster and less of a healer. a) they need to be able to solo content outside of dungeons/raids
b) PvP, bro
c) it benefits the party
2) Your devil's advocate argument is a poor one, because WHM (and SCH) can easily dps in many contents without neglecting healing at all. If a healer is only dpsing, and fails to heal, then you have something. But a WHM who is casting Holy for AoE pulls is not "pretending" to be a dps. THEY ARE ACTUALLY DOING MORE DPS THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE PARTY. Holy spam is the most efficient/damaging AoE in the game, period. Plus, it stuns enemies. Until that gets resisted, it helps keep them from doing damage, thus enabling further Holys before going back to healing.
3) I think everyone would appreciate when the tank adds more dps. I don't think most people EXPECT that a tank or healer do a lot of damage, but certainly I'm sure they appreciate it when the healer is doing absolutely nothing because the tank isn't taking any damage for 20-30 seconds, that maybe they throw out some dps. It's like saying you don't NEED to keep the entire party topped off on hp. As long as they don't die, you're fine. While technically true, people will appreciate not being at half life constantly. Similarly, they will appreciate it when mobs die faster because you played your job more efficiently. Nothing is a "pure" anything. Everyone has several tools to bring to the table, and everyone has some impact on overall dps, which is why WAR with more STR is appreciated when they are able to get away with it, because more dps is simply more dps.
