You are right it does prevent gill deflation to a extent but there needs to be a balance with inflation and deflation,in this game there is one its just massive deflation.
You think it's good design to require people to market board camp all day?
I'm still not sure if this (which I believe is how it was in FFXI) will be the best approach. In one hand, it'd encourage people to actually think about what the value of their item is and the profit they are willing to make. The current system I'm pretty sure people just look at the lowest price and undercut that. At best people might look at the history to see what the item has gone for and adjust based on that.
The more I craft and look at the cost of the materials I've acquired the more I realize how grossly overpriced people sell stuff.

WOW also had a great AH system, it uses both are current MB System and a AH system combined, you could either bid on a item and the person with the highest bit at the end of the listing time, usually 24,48,72 hour gets the item for that price or the item can be bough immidetly at the buyout price. So you would actually have the best of both where the seller and the buyer would both greatly benefit this. Im going to be frank here so take it with a grain of salt if you like, A realm Reborn has been out for over a year yet its ecnomy still is highly unstable, aparently there is a big problem here.
Something needs to be done
I, for one don't mine the undercutting in the market board. As a gatherer and crafter, I find it beneficial on both fronts. One, I sell my crafted items faster and two, I buy crafting materials at a low price thanks to under cutters. So I am pro-undercutting.
People sure as hell don't undercut those SWEET IV MATERIA
C'MONNNNNNNNN

its a market... you play it... /thread
"Try not. Do or do not. There is no try."
I think a good system if you were to implement any restrictions at all on market boards, is to implement a timer for items. This wouldn't fix all the problems, however if you prevent people from constantly undercutting the items in competition, it may help stabilize the market boards in both, price gouging and undercutting if there was an earth-time restriction on repositing and item on the market board.
Ex.
I sell i55 craft/gathering accessories at 115k Ra on my server, that's about 30k profit for me, many others sell theirs at 140k, in my eyes that's price gouging, but if you can find a fool to pay for it, why not I guess.
If someone undercuts me I don't really bother much in starting a war over it, but I've seen countless times battles go on with certain providers, constantly dropping prices by 1-10 percent each undercut, but if you couldn't repost an item on the boards for an hour or 30 minutes, I think this would help stop the undercutting.
Then again, the market boards work...and for the most part the stabilize themselves, if people are saying that's way undrpirce, how are they even making a profit, I'd say to reevaluate, because if something stays at that price for longer than a couple days, I say capitalism has reprised that said item.
Good luck to all yall working the market boards, wether you undercut or price gouge, you contribute to that items price

It's called supply and demand.
Too much supply not enough demand? Prices drop.(undercutting)
Too much demand not enough supply? Prices increase.
