I need some advice regarding L houses.

    Hey my fellow housing enthusiasts!

I need some advice with a decision I maybe wanna make ... or not. ^^'

So, my personal house is a medium and I am very happy with it. My boyfriend used to own a small house and he let me decorate it, but since he doesn't play anymore, it's gone now. ^^ But that's okay, since I still had my FCs house, which is a large.
A friend who used to own the large house, stopped playing and let my FC relocate to the plot.

Now, well I had a lot of fun decorating it but at the same time I was really struggling... 400 items for a house of this size is just not enough. I knew that before but oh well who would have said no to the L plot, right?

I don't really wanna cut off the whole basement or upstairs to make it look decently filled. :S

So I am considering to relocate to a small house in the Mist (my FC house is in the goblet)... but people might think I am crazy. xD But I just found small houses really the best to decorate... I am really not sure what to do.
Sure the L house gives me more space to build in more different areas, but it always looks half empty when I walk in. >.<

So, my question is just, what would you do?
I read here in the forums before already of a person who saved up money to finally be able to buy a L plot and then ending up being disappointed. But I don't know if SE will actually raise the amount of placeable items once again. :3 argh ^^'

So, it's a bit of a mixed bag. First of all - and this is just hearsay, so don't take it as granted, though it doesn't seem unreasonable - there's a chance they may be raising the indoor housing limits again with 5.0.

That being said... it is hard to make a L looked lived-in - but not impossible. We just recently moved our FC from a medium into a large, but we also took some unique approaches to some of our rooms. We have a grand open entrance, a bakery and a sushi bar upstairs, a war room and sitting room on the main floor, and our basement is a sort of "outdoor" shrine area, which also utilizes the "open space" concept.

If what you really want is a grand, sprawling house full of niches and knicknacks, a large will not accomplish that without blocking off a good amount of space. We took it as a sort of challenge - was it possible to use all the space and still have a viable layout? It was fun, and frustrating, and we keep getting more ideas. But it definitely takes some tweaking.

Personally, I look at it like: Larges are hard to come by, and if you get the chance to get one it in a location you like, it might be worth it and just making do with the limits (blocking off basements, etc.) so that when they do give us more items, you'll have the large, and not then be suddenly looking for one. But I also know that frustrates many people, so I think it's really up to how you feel about it.

It's what I did when I got my large when we were still on the 200 limit. A few partitions blocking basement.
300 for a medium isn't enough either, 265 items and I am not done yet.

Are you decorating it as a personal home or as a FC house? A FC house would make sense with large fairly open spaces filled with a relatively small number of items and only a few rooms filled with clutter. Even large homes in real life frequently have sparsely decorated rooms mixed with the cluttered rooms.

Up to you in the long run though I think if you do want to relocate you might be happier holding out for another medium instead of going to a small. The item to floor space ratio is almost twice what it is for a large. I don't have much problem working with the 300 item limit in my medium as long as I don't use a large number of partitions and imitation windows.

As for an increase to item limit, there will probably be one eventually but unless it's announced at JP FanFest I wouldn't expect it until the implied Ishgard housing is added. With the restoration announced to last over several patches, that probably wouldn't be until 5.3.

    Thank you for your answers.

So yeah, my thought was as well, what if they raise the limit one day and then I relocated to a small... maybe I would bite myself for that. xD
But it's a possibility... so many people want it. I just don't know if it would kill loading time for PS4-users or old PCs and that's why they don't do it?

I have a very open area in the basement at the moment. Also more garden-like. I love that spot actually the most.
The rest of the house looks a bit more like a homey home. ^^' (Except maybe for the small library-part)

I would like to decorate it more as a FC house, even tho I don't have any active members left at the moment... (except one but only for one month, after that he wanted to only play with Shadowbringers again).
But my house is already a personal home so I guess that's fine.

I think I should just give it another try to redecorate it as it is. Before I do something I might regret later. If I relocate and they raise the item limit I will never find a L plot again. ^^

I think, unless you're set on a specific small/medium, I'd go ahead and keep what you have until you know better what their plans are for housing in 5.0. Better to be safe than sorry! Especially as they give us more items like the verdant partitions that can be used to transform the space without using a lot of wall planters.

!! Dont relocate if ur fc house is large !!
    Haha

    You do you.
I had 4 mediums and 9 smalls. I always pefer small houses and also bcuse of L shaped garden. I decorated 3 LArge houses. It wasnt an easy task if ur a detailist like me.
I too always seemed to struggle with mediums/large and had to cut off basement for it space.

Honestly house size doesnt tell ur gaming worth. Rather what you can feel make out of it and feel like u fulfilled it.

Also edit: im halfasleep and completely ignored «fc» u mentioned.

My fc refuses to move to a mansion because of the furnishing issue. 400 slots is nowhere near enough to fill it unless you choose to only use large furnishings, but then that would mean throwing away any sort of thematic decor.

So we have a medium. They can easily be furnished well with 300 slots and it grants us more freedom than a cottage for a fc of our size with as many crafters as we have. For us the medium is the best of both worlds. It's not too big, but also not too small.

So in short OP, no I don't think you're crazy to think about leaving a mansion behind for a smaller plot because you want a better experience for decorating. We are staying away from mansions for the same reason.

I'm decorating an L for my hubby and myself.
I'm having a large (like almost the staircase wide entry/foyer. I have and will use items on the larger scale (Paramore bed, Hingan Lounges, Knights desk etc). The theme is dark romance (Black, Navy(Shadow and Rhontano), Red (Wine) and Pinkys (Rose, Plum and Regal).
I do like some openness for screenshots that have nothing behind and so I don't need my camera angle close to my char.

For an FC house, it's pretty easy to fill up space without approaching the item limit. Ideas like restaurants or barracks can fill up huge chunks of space with just a few tables or beds. You could use the Knightly Round Table to fill up an area practically by itself.

Decorating a large house can be a daunting task, and while it would be nice to have even more item slots, it can absolutely be done effectively with 400.

Also remember: Don't be afraid of open space. You don't have to cover every square inch with items. You're living in a mansion, not a storage unit.

A few more ideas for more open areas:
    Church
    Theater
    Garden
    Club
