I'm in need of gil and see offers to buy them at associated web sites. Is this a legitimate thing to do?

You will only be cheating yourself.
No, it is not legitimate. Purchasing gil offered by 'Real Money Traders' (RMT or 'gilsellers') is actually against the Terms of Service you agreed to when you created your account, and thus, if SE discovers you have purchased said gil for real money, your account will not only be suspended, but completely deleted. RMT harms the legitimate economy in the game and ultimately ends up costing you as a player. So ignore the temptation to deal with the devil so to speak.
Besides, it's not that difficult to get gil nowadays legitimately via the Challenge Log, the Hunt and levequests, so why people are still buying illegal gil for cash is beyond me.
Nooooooooo
I love the official forums, they tell you to use the search for thread about what you wanted to talk but when you use it they judge for necro a thread.
Don't do it or you will be banned forever.

Real Money Trade (RMT)
Our Definition of RMT
RMT is defined as the selling and buying of virtual assets for real-world money. Virtual assets can include, but is not limited to:
•Accounts
•Characters
•In-game Currency (Gil)
•In-game Service
•In-game item
Items and GIL obtained illegally through 3rd party tools or RMT activities can affect the game’s economic stability, and can disrupt the game play balance. Some 3rd party programs contain viruses and spyware, which can be harmful to other players unbeknownst to the 3rd party program user. This can lead to a leak of a user’s personal data, character deletion, or other unfortunate circumstances. We have a zero tolerance policy for RMT.
In other words, noooopppppe.
Please do not, i get enough spam messages as do many others from RMT.
Just take up mining and or crafting and gil is rather easy to make.
Alumen and Electrum usually sell well
I was under the impression that only the sellers were perma banned, the buyers merely suspended.if SE discovers you have purchased said gil for real money, your account will not only be suspended, but completely deleted. RMT harms the legitimate economy in the game and ultimately ends up costing you as a player. So ignore the temptation to deal with the devil so to speak.
Don't buy gil! It will make you sad face when your account gets banned. You can make easy money crafting (low level items even sell for a premium), gathering (shards sell quickly so if you have a good movie to watch tada! Other items sell well too.) and spirit bonding (the material market is the fastest moving items besides shards on the market and you can make big money with them.)
No the buyers also get banned, my friend got banned because he had a friend (they are not close anymore) log into his account buy gil then mail it to his character. My friend got banned his friend got ill-gotten gains. ;-;
