I don't mine, personally, but I do make quite a bit from selling materials (mostly through desynth). It'll take a bit of research, but it's not impossible to earn a decent amount of gil. Just be sure to do your own research and find your own answers. If you find your answers online, remember that your competition also found the same information, which means you'll already have competition waiting for you. Look for your own little corner of the market, and proceed to make your fortune.
I'd also look into crafting to supplement. More so to have easy reference to all of the recipes. The online guides are great, but it's also nice to have a reference in game.
Being able to use your own material also give you alternative selling options, especially in the event that the mined material prices go below your liking. You can always craft your materials in something else to sell (granite into cut stones, for example). The price of the crafted material might also be more profitable, and be more worthwhile than selling the mined material. Auto synth is great for this.
Also do you research on what the ideal amount that is needed, for whatever your selling. If the material is only used in groups of let's say 5, 10 and 20, it wouldn't make sense to sell it in some large stack. More often than not, your buyer will use what they need, and put the remainder back on the market (usually for cheaper). If they only get what they need, then there will be nothing left to put back on the market. You don't want to be responsible for your own competition. You also have a bit more liberty with your pricing, if you are selling in exact stacks (especially if you competition is all selling in stacks of 99).
