It's a nice gesture to give condolences and hold in-game vigils, but that it's being done on servers he didn't play on, by people who knew neither him nor anyone who knew him, just makes me wonder if it's going to be like this for every upcoming death as well.
Mmm depends. Even in passing, the death of someone can become a tiring occasion. Eventually, it just doesn't become as painful of an experience to sympathize with... that's just how it is to be human. The sadness is still there, but you just become more adjusted to it. The individual who passes away also needs to be someone of consequence, and by that, I mean someone who others know (or liked). Just like IRL, we don't know who it is that passed away today, who will pass away tomorrow, etc... and as a result, we don't mourn for them. And just like you said, death is common IRL, and so we don't hold it to be anything expected for strangers to mourn (under common situations and circumstance).

Until the time comes that IRL death becomes a common occurrence within the world of Eorzea, such events like this will generally be handled in similar manner, again, assuming this person has friends willing to remember them in such ways. Of course, friends aren't the only people that can do this. Strangers can easily help to pay their respects to someone, as seen in this case. It just comes down to whether or not someone is willing to put in that effort.

I wondered how long it was going to be before this kind of pusillanimous posting would appear. As for being like this for others, well, I would certainly like to think so. More to the point, what kind of person would even feel motivated make such comments.

No one is promised tomorrow. These sad events could of happened to anyone of us in a day. And regardless of if we knew him or not, Someone out there did.

Someone lost a son, brother, friend, enemy, lover and beyond in one single moment so I pay my condolences to all who knew him and respects whether he is on my server or not because this one person could of been just as easily one of those who are very close and dear to my own heart. ♥

    No, it won't.

The only reason it got so "out there" was due to Redditt and Kotaku and other media places picking it up that the "story" was fed to.

I don't see the massive outpouring for my friend and FFXI/ FFXIV player that passed a few months ago.

Oh that's right. We never announced his passing except to past/present LS/FC members and friends.

I see your point, i still remember a beta tester who passed before the release of the game, a friend of his made a thread but we couldn't freely access the game back then. This is just an idea, but i think we could do this every year to remember those who are no longer with us, not only Codex.

This is actually a good idea. As was stated before, not everyone who loses a fellow player goes to the forums with it, or notifies the public. They may want to keep it a private affair, so as not to intrude into a family's moment of grief. Some people find this sort of thing awkward. They can't really understand why strangers would do something such as this for people they don't know, or they find it cheap and silly because "it's just a game." This isn't something that can be done every time a fellow player dies because it relies on getting the word out, and that doesn't always happen.

If you want the community to be able to show support for all of their fellow players who pass, the best option is this idea. Pick one day out of the year to do a player run event in game and a hold a vigil to remember those players who have passed.

Death is a touchy subject. I wasn't looking to start a fight. What kind of person would feel motivated to make a comment like yours, then?

That is a nice idea. Maybe SE could even make an annual in-game event to "remember the fallen".

I like that idea! It'd be a remembrance event, The Black Shroud seems like a fitting area with the moogles and talk of elementals and such

Sincere condolences from Cerberus. Losing a friend/family member is always hard, and though games have created long distance relationships, these bonds are nothing to laugh at.
Friendship and community transcends that to the best.
