    Itemization in FFXI in unexciting

    1. In comparison to previous MMORPGS I've played, gear mitigates an insignificant amount of encounter difficulty.

    2. Secondary stats (det, crit, spell speed, skill speed, piety) are nearly unnoticeable.

    3. Gear level is upgraded almost as fast as it can be attained.

    4. There is no critical thinking involved in choosing your equipment.

    5. PVP gear has no significant use outside of glamour.

    6. Regularly accessed content is so easy that cutting edge gear makes the experience go from easy to faceroll easy.

    Just my two cents.

Yes. This is not new or shocking information.

Obviously, it was a deliberate choice on SE's part.

So you think gear is unexciting because......it doesn't make you overpowered? doesn't carry you through content? I don't get this thread much really xc

Maybe if you do something beyond dungeons you'll notice the different value each secondary stat has. If you go with the wrong secondary stats, you will be vastly inferior to someone who chose more wisely. Don't believe me? Go pure Crit. lol

That's the only reason I'm here... :P lmao

Hey OP, it's an MMO. That's how these things work. 10% of the population always calls for MORE MORE HARDER HARDER (Not an innuendo...) and complains when things get nerfed so that the other 88% can play. That 88% wants everything handed to them, wants things to be easy, doesn't want to research their jobs or rotations, or plan out gear itemizations (I'm exaggerating a little). The remaining 2% is just "Yeah, whatever man. Just like... Play the game and chill, dude."

Also we ARE talking about XIV and not XI, right? :P Just *cough* checking!

I think it has to do more with that there is no thought put into the gear.
If you want to be the best, you need this BiS gear, nothing else. And when you do get that BiS gear, it will become obsolete quicker then you got it once a new patch comes out. Gear is very linear, with no room for personalization, other then materia slots, or other options.

One thing I have to say about the OP's #2, secondary stats do play a role.
Scholars require Crit. It makes our shields so much better.
Speed Spell is negative stat for Summoners because it ruins their DoT rotation.
White Mages and now Summoners enjoy having more Piety.

Welcome to the WoW-type vertical progression MMO, where all the different stats are by and large redundant and can really be "condensed" to just one number.

the way I see it you have two people... some people like Diablo 2 and its complex but ultimately rewarding and interesting Itemization. Then you have some people like Diablo 3's "1.0" itemization.

But to the point... A lot of people ignored all that "math has real world applications" talk in school so can't understand an items usefulness unless they slap in a system that is and always will be "Big number > Little number"(Item Level), so it makes it easier for people to have a goal when they don't have to think too hard on which item they should get or need because of big words like "Double Attack +2".

This is why we have "Item level" itemization... its easier for the idiots, millenials, Participation ribbon babies, how I shot math common person to understand, and is much easier to pick up on an get into. Almost every MMO is pretty much Item level now, or in some form Item level (I.e Tiers, Blue/green/orange/etc are basically just I/lv without the numbers). Its a familiarity that puts people in comfort zone, and Item levels/tiers are familiar, and basically really stupid easy to program/balance too, so some logic is that they have more time to balance the content rather than focusing on how to balance the gear.

Item levels have their own problems though, particularly "Power Creep", and the fact that I think in the future its going to be stupid to have us being "Item level 400", which just sounds dumb coming off your tongue. Honestly Power Creep is one of the biggest issues Itemlevel MMOs face, and you can already see it happening in XIV (Level caps on old dungeons)
