No, you can play all the previous content at your pace np, the only thing that works that way is the appearance of a camp which have been evolving since day one , revenant's toll, you should take good look at it before the update to make comparisons later.

The story has 2 parts the patch has 3, first we will get the first part, between february and and march gold saucer, and in late march the second part of the story, at least that's how it sounded to me when reading the letter, Yoshi said 2 parts in the last LL, but may be they decided to divide it in 3 parts to release the big finale right before the expansion.

The mystery trial is Odin, I believe.

They have already said we are fighting an instanced Odin in 2.5. Not much of a mystery if the secrets out.

There is a decent chance that this "Mystery Trial" will be Gilgamesh Extreme. Since Greg is still hanging around, and is obviously unhappy at us for defeating him way back in the first case, he'll probably send us a challenge to face him at his full power (IE, all 8 arms) at some point during or after the Hildibrand questline.

At least, that's my hope anyway. And I also hope he drops joke weapons, like Excalipoor, or Nragarok!

So any idea what the Battle of Ishgard is going to be?

There's a hint in the art book about something happening to Gridania in 3.0. I'm guessing that's the "fall" that this comes before.

Really looking forward to Gold Saucer and Triple Triad but I'm not too happy they threw some cards in as dungeon loot. I'd have rather won them thru challenging NPC card battles =\
