Well, it seems official, driver update 280.26 is the problem.

I decided to reinstall the update and play Final Fantasy XIV to test it. I have noticed a small FPS increase, but the fan attached to my graphics card increased in speed just a few minutes after loggin (spelling?). I didn't play the game long enough to allow it to crash (because I didn't want to), and rollback again to the previous driver version. Afterwords my graphics card was able to breath a lot easier at the small cost of FPS. I played for a few hours with a party, doing levequests in multiple areas, and not a single crash was experienced. Final Fantasy XIV is back to being stable for me! :-D.

Thank you Maxwell! Without you I probably would have never thought of a rollback to a previous driver version, and I wouldn't be playing Final Fantasy XIV again (at most until the PS3 version is released).

    Edit: Improved grammar.
