To people getting FFXIV over the holidays

I say welcome! I'm going to dump some quick tips that I wish I knew when I was starting out.

1. Do your main story quest. This is bolded because half of the questions people ask (How do airship?) are answered/unlocked by doing the main quest line. You can tell what is the main line by the fancy marker in your log.

2. Do Guildhests. They are a super fantastical way to be introduced to basic MMO party-play and wish more games had them. They are also a huge boost in exp and gil for a very short time investment.

Those tips should help out in your first few days and I'm sure people will chime in with their own tips for all you new adventurers. and if you're on Coeurl feel free to ask me questions by typing "/tell Emerald Hill msg" without quotes obviously. I will gladly hand out HQ subligar to those who need it. I (as well as anyone else here) can refer you as well for if you want a item that gives 25% more exp until 25.

If you don't want to be spammed with random tells and invites from gil spammers and unsolicited free company invites, set your status to /busy . Just remember to turn busy status off when you want to be invited into a party or want to receive tells from someone you want to speak with or want to be able to accept the invitation to a free company or link shell.

Or, you could simply disable /yell and /shout in the chat filters (yes I know that stops you also seeing legitimate shouts and yells, but it's a small price to pay).

My recommendations: make sure you attune to every aetheryte you come across, and set your home point there if you know you're going to be in that area for a while. That way, if you die, you can just respawn in the same area. Also, make sure you talk to all of the chocobo keepers so you can use chocobos to travel.

Why would ppl suddenly get ffxiv over the holidays?

Someone could buy it using christmas money, or could get it from a friend, relative, or significant other as a christmas present.

On topic: If you need money, pursue crafting and gathering; People will pay good money for high quality items and materials, and will even sometimes pay decently well for normal quality items and materials. On a related note, you can tell an item is HQ by the sparkles in the icon and a little icon next to its tooltip name.

Get a retainer, be familiarized with the market, accept any invitation or messages you receive from a free company and do all side quests. Take some time to understand the game menu and system options and use online resources when necessary. Good luck and have fun
