I think (ok, hope) job crystals might get there own levels that overwrite the base classes levels in the expansion.

Jobs with base classes will level the class in parallel with the crystal. Jobs without wouldn't.
So for instance putting one level on Bard would also automatically put an extra level on Archer. However putting Dark Knight on a level 30 Archer will overwrite your class abilities and gaining a level on it wouldn't advance you as an Archer.

Would also work well for Arcanist/Summoner/Scholar. They could finally have distinct stats, you could also have Summoner or Scholar alter the base class much more drastically.

Edit: The old 2.0 jobs should be signposted much more clearly, under this system getting an archer to level 34 then getting your job stone would reset you to level 30 bard, which would be annoying.

Still holding out some hope for this sort of thing .

The Whole glimed Smn/Scholar is a dead idea. I play both well, I main Smn. With the right gear on Scholar and good healing habits you can make up the gap.

From everything I've seenand heard about ffxiv from 1.0 and everything current; its obvious that changing 1.0's class system to a plain job systen (which they are acting like they want to do) would have been too difficult at 2.0 since so much was already made. However classes, as applied in XIV, are against every other FF title in the series. In other FF titles they're called classes but are the JOBS. Yoshi-P has stated in live letters and interviews that many of the changes he's made is to put it back in line with other FF games by returning the FEEL of the series to XIV. The class system is one of the few remaining break-points that hasn't been changed over the course of 2.0 and with 3.0 looming and three Jobs being stated as Classless, I think the 3.0 patch will have a number of changes to the Class System we see today.

However, to everyone saying that with the class system gone, so to will be cross class skills. lol The system for that isn't restricted to classes. a WHM will still be able to set Swiftcast, a WAR flash, etc. But the abilities are going to be listed as a BLM skill, or a PLD skill....not THM or MRD.

A blue mage must wrest her strength and vitality from her enemies. Show me your hunger for unrivaled power! This is the only guidance I shall give you."

So what happens if you happen to be a Lv 28 MRD then pass lv 30? Do you just become a War? Would you be able to stay a Lv 33 MRD?

You do not become a warrior until you complete the quest Pride and Duty. Additionally, you must level a Gladiator to level 15 to unlock this quest.
They are rare but I have seen a level 50 Marauder.

Well, if the class system is falling apart as it seems, I think you will start with a warrior at lv 1, and you will only get good skills (the job ones) doing the quests at lvs 15, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and so on... Who is already a lv50 Warrior will remain as it is.

I think people would flip-out if they had to restart at level 1. >A>
