I have names turned off in the game. I don't have names floating above the heads of everyone I look at in real life, and so I don't like all that text cluttering my screen in a game. It just makes everything more enjoyable to look at (for me). I have it set to show me their name if I target them, however, so I can still easily see the names of a few nearby individuals easily enough. But in larger crowds this is impractical.
Using the filter options, I do keep nameplates turned on for players on my friends list. Unlike real life, there is not enough variety and details in this game to allow me to recognize a friend's avatar at a glance.
The problem is with Free Company members. For some strange reason there is no option to display the nameplates of characters who are in your Free Company. There's an option for friends, for party members, for alliance members, other characters, pets, companions, NPCs, enemies, etc.. but nothing for Free Company members. That seems like an odd oversight.
I would very much appreciate having that option added to the existing ones. I hate passing by Free Company members and not acknowledging their presence because I didn't realize I was in the presence of someone from my FC. I don't want to have to clutter my screen with the nameplates of every player just to see the names of a few key people I care about.
