1) They don't sound like they are joking. If they are, it's a lame joke.

2) Apparently, just because I think MLP and jokes about it are lame, that means I'm a square with no sense of humor...

It's not a big deal. I don't understand the whole MLP thing either, however in the letter it made me chuckle. It was a well placed reference by the translators. As evident by a lot of forum posts, the translators like to make "buddy-buddy" jokes.

For a bit of consolation, if you read the table describing current and planned changes they simply refer to the system as "Personal Chocobos."

Just shrug off the insults and don't take any of it personally. The interblags are a good place to develop a thick skin for that kind of stuff.
