It was a much more fun event I agree. I personally like the dailys as well. Theres RNG in the premium gift bags but RNG is inevitible. No MMORPG is without RNG.Giving credit when credit is due, in my opinion the starlight event has been the best in-game event by far! No fate spam-fest, and no RNG to worry about!
I absolutely love how personal/free company housing was brought into this event. I've met more people from the ward where my FC and individual house is located than I ever have before. The quest rewards are fun and everyone seems to really be enjoying the event.
Congrats SE!! Finally a successful in-game event!!
Looking at the event page the items shown are all currently available...which means we don't know what items become available that day.
Think about it, nobody wants to die, there's rules to this game son, I'm justified.

It definitely has some pros and cons to it. Like others, I did enjoy that it brought out some interaction in the housing wards. I've mixed feelings about the dailies: on one hand it's nice that holiday items aren't just straight up gil to buy and then be done with it, you actually have to involve yourself in the event. But I would agree dailies can be slightly stressful to some worried about missing a day (despite the impact being probably not much), especially compounded with the other dailies that people feel compelled to complete (beastmen, roulettes, etc). It is nice to not have FATE zergfests as well, but have to agree that the dailies for this event are somewhat bland "run to the tree then return" with little variety.
Overall a great step in the right direction. I think what could be better moving forward is involving more player to player interaction, and more really unorthodox ideas than just running around town. I'm with Hiruke above and seem to recall FFXI's events from the time I played that early on being much more fun and involved, for example:
-Trading Easter eggs with letters on them to spell words: you'd have to trade letters with other people to get what you need (i.e. "want to trade an E for a G") Recent XIV Valentines did something similar, but the dependence on character gender wasn't a good move there IMO.
-Goldfish scooping in rivers outside of town for summer. Simple, and not really any more complicated than just clicking, but somehow it seemed to mask that and feel fun.
-There was a Halloween(?) event that sent you invisible to high level areas like Cauldron or Den of Rancor but level synced you to 1, and you had to sneak around to a goal point, harmless as long as you didn't accidentally remove the invis, but effective in putting a little bit of scare in you
Though I do believe XI had a tendency to reuse the exact same event each year, so I appreciate that XIV gives us some new variations each time they come around.
