Of course they need them. They need to sell them because I need to buy them. I don't have much time to devote to running a dungeon just for the crafting material, so I buy them. If only the crafters had them, the prices would be sky high, if they didn't keep them all for themselves, not that they aren't now but not too bad for some stuff. Could use about 100 fine wax and manor varnish, going for the gothic dungeon look for my lower floor in my house.
