    Confused how Classes work?

    Okay, a very new person to the game, and I have a question regarding classes/jobs.

    Can only the two classes; Disciples of the Land and Disciples of the Hand actually utilize Alchemist, Goldsmith, Armorer, Blacksmith, Carpenter, Botanist, Fisher, Miner, etc. . . ?

    I mean as an Archer like myself, can I not learn some of the above jobs to outfit myself with gear and weapons and maybe make some gil(sp?) on the Market Board by selling stuff I harvest or craft? I'm confused on how this works?

    I have been reading up on things on some fansites, and I'm very confused on how the jobs/classes coincide with each other.

    It looks like from what I'm reading I would have to be a Disciple of the Hand if I wanted to craft things and would not be able to do anything else, but be a craftsmen. What if I want to fight and be a Warrior too?

    Very confused?

    You can level every class, but you can only be one class at any given time, which is determined by your main hand equipment. If you're following the main story quests and your class quests, which you should be, between levels 10 and 15 you'll be told you're allowed to change classes. At that point, you can go to any other class's guild, take the quest from the receptionist, and unlock the class. Each class levels separately, but you can share common gear between them.

    This means that you can be a warrior and a crafter, but not both at the same time. You either wear your warrior gear and fight or your crafting gear and make stuff.

    As for jobs, they just sit on top of classes via a specific equipment slot.

    Classes are divided into broad categories. All Goldsmiths, Alchemists, Culinarians, Weavers, Leatherworkers, and other classes who craft items are called "Disciples of the Hand". The Fisher, Miner, and Botanist classes that obtain items from gathering are called "Disciples of the Land". Battle classes are divided into "Disciples of War" and "Disciples of Magic" depending on their primary attack mode.

    You'll never have to worry about picking one of these. They'll be listed on equipment, though, to tell you who can equip it without having to list every class separately.

    You have to first reach level 10 on your current class to unlock the Armoury system which gives you the ability to freely change classes by changing your weapon.

    Example:
    Equip a bow ---> Archer
    Equip a lance ---> Lancer
    Equip a Needle ---> Weaver
    Equip a Pickaxe ---> Miner

    You can swap anytime out of combat once you have access to the Armoury system. Each class is individually leveled up.

    There are varying tiers:

    -Discipline: broad term to describe what type of class you are. Disciple of Land = gatherer, Disciple of Magic = magic user, etc.

    -Class: Archer, Gladiator, Conjurer, etc based on your currently equipped weapon

    -Job: earn a Soul Crystal at level 30 on your class to specialize your class and "upgrade" it to the appropriate job. Thaumaturge becomes Black Mage, Archer becomes Bard, etc.

    "Disciple of the Land" is not a class. That's the mistake you've made in understanding - it's just a broad header.

    Carpenter, Blacksmith, Botanist, Archer, Conjurer - these are all actual classes. And you have complete freedom to play every single one on a single character and can switch more or less freely.

    1st step) Completing your level 10 class quest on the original class you started the game with unlocks the Armory System that lets you switch classes.
    2nd) Once you've done that, you can take any of the "So you want to be a <class>" quests from the receptionists at the various class guilds. This leads into the quest that unlocks that particular class.
    3rd) Once you've unlocked a class, you can switch to that class simply by equipping that class's weapon or tool. So when you have a bow equipped, you're an archer and when you have a saw equipped, you're a carpenter. But you can only equip weapons/tools whose class you've unlocked. (You can unlock and then level as many of the game's classes as you wish. Many of us are leveling up all of them.)

    One other note: You'll have a separate level for each class you unlock, and will start each newly unlocked class at level 1. So it's a good idea to keep a hold of your starter gear to wear when unlocking new classes, as you'll initially only be able to equip level 1 armour. (Not that level 1 armour really does much for you, but it just looks silly when you see players running around the guild area in their underwear because they just unlocked a new class and don't have anything they can wear.)

    As mentioned above, it's the weapon or tool you equip that actually determines your current class, but with different classes needing different armour/jewelry (both because of being different levels and because of gear designed for a particular type of class/job), you'll usually want to swap out all your gear at once when changing classes rather than just your main hand weapon/tool. To make this easier, the game lets you assign gear into Gear Sets, so instead of just equipping your saw, for instance, you'd equip your Carpenter Gear Set, which would include your saw and whichever armour and jewelry suits a crafting class at your current CRP level.

    This sounds awesome. . .will I get a pop up tutorial explaining how to use and set up gear sets?

    Yes. IIRC, I think the Gear Sets are unlocked at the same time as the ability to add additional classes is unlocked, which is when you complete your level 10 class quest on your original class. At any rate, when it's unlocked, you'll get a tutorial pop-up to explain it.
