Can't we get some decent looking Katanas/Daggers?

    Original Post:

Our options in terms of glamour as a Ninja are extremely limited.

If we want to go for the whole traditional "Ninja" look, we have no choice but to use the Relic chain weapons (Relic/Zenith/Atma/Novus/Nexus).

Aside from that, we have these enormous "daggers" (such as "cleavers") that might as well be swords. If that's not the case, then they are genuinely pretty ugly or strange.

Considering that classes aren't exactly a popular choice at end game, I don't see why we only have 1 style of Katanas, and everything else is some strange looking "dagger".

I suppose this could be said for a few jobs - however NIN's arsenal is somewhat limited in terms of actual Katanas.

    Edited:

I am going to change the topic of this thread a little as this sort of applies to all end-game weapons.

We need more simplistic / traditional weapons in general with a lot less "over the top" designs. I am all for a thematic approach to weapon series (such as primal weapons etc) however I believe that a lot of the newer weapons were designed rather poorly or rushed..

All in all - pretty much all of the weapons seem over-done. I mean it is certainly nice to have some weapons that are over the top (as tastes vary quite a lot) however for those of us that like the more simplistic designs are pretty much out of luck. One exception that came close (in my opinion) was the Soldiery weapons from the previous patch (Liberator, Burtgang etc).

My biggest issue with most of the bladed weapons is that a good portion of them are extremely fat/wide.
Below is an example of concept art for Katanas in FF Tactics (not the Ninja style blades), but I am posting this image as an example.

There are 7 different weapons here, all of which look very different - not because of the whole shape, but more because of the differences in the hilts, with some inscriptions/designs on the blade.
The point of this image is to show how the more traditional styled weapons can look completely different, however maintain that traditional look:

All of these weapons look different, while they still have a fairly simplistic design. They are "tame" and haven't gone completely overboard. This, in my opinion, is a more desirable style then our current options for Swords. There is nothing wrong with over the top designs, however we do need some more traditional styles thrown in the mix.

I think the Garuda daggers look nice.

And to be fair, NIN is new. Give the devs some time to add more variety to daggers. You may as well be complaining that paladins get mostly paddles insteads of swords.

While Ninja is indeed new - There should have been a full line of Katanas of some kind introduced with it or at least more than just the Relic. Even in XI when Ninja was added they added quite a few "Katana" line of models and weapons. While true in XI you could actually use multiple weapons per job (!) it came with it's own thing.

Katanas would not suit ninja well at all, they are a dual wielding class, and Katanas are too large to be wielded with their fighting style, although I wouldn't mind seeing more variety of Tantō

Well considering Ninjas generally use Katanas or Sai (or at least in terms of blades), and we only have 1 option for that (Relic). I think my complaint is pretty justified when we have multiple "cleavers", daggers, knives etc (most of which are quite ugly). Most of our "options" are extremely fat (wide) blades.

While Ninja is still a new class - it also has as many "unique" weapon designs as other classes - the issue being is that all of them are either cleavers or wonky looking daggers.

The Garuda weapons are also far from the traditional Ninja style weapons. I don't really see what you are trying to prove with those screenshots.

As far as Paladins - that is just not true, as there isn't a single "paddle" style weapon in end game.

Basically what I meant. Full length Katanas won't suit them at all, that much is obvious - I am speaking of the shorter blades such as the Relic weapons.

Actually, ninjas generally used whatever they could get their hands on as weapons, ranging from hedge clippers if they were pretending to be a gardener of their target, to hair pins if they were a prostitute getting close to their target.

However even the romanticized ninja rarely used katana, they typical used Tantō, or Wakizashi.

    Tanto - being a short-blade Katana.

Tanto meaning "Short blade". Katana being a japanese sword.

Ie a Short Bladed sword (Katana).

Considering it's fairly obvious as to what I mean, I don't think the semantics of a foreign language needs to be debated over.

Incorrect again, a Tanto is a short bladed Nihonto (Nihonto is defined as a traditionally made Japanese bladed weapon), various other bladed weapons that are also Nihonto are Wakizashi, Katana, Naginata, Daisho, etc.

The NIN daggers from the end of Stone Vigil normal look pretty cool. I got lucky and they dropped when my BF ran me through on my NIN, I didn't even think to look at what the old dungeons dropped for NINs .
