Stupid question about macros (PS3)

Not a stupid question at all, as it is rather counter-intuitive. But the answer lies in only using the on-screen keyboard for one line at a time.
So:
1) Go to the text area of the macro window and use Triangle to bring up the on-screen keyboard.
2) Enter the first line of text you want
3) Press Start (identified as equivalent to "Enter" but really isn't in this case) so the on-screen keyboard closes leaving that first line of text in the macro window
4) Now, without the on-screen keyboard, but still in the text area of the macro window, press the X button. It will move you to the next line.
5) Press triangle to bring back the on-screen keyboard and to type in your second line of text
6) Repeat steps 3, 4, 5, as many times as needed.

Edit:
Incidentally, the PS4 version uses the same pattern, but is somewhat less confusing because its on-screen keyboard doesn't even claim to have an "Enter" or "Linefeed" button (both of which are shown on the PS3 version but don't work like their names indicate). The PS4's on-screen keyboard just has letters and other characters plus a "Done" button (R2).
