Chocobo training is unlocked but can I play a lower class and train it?

I unlocked chocobo training at lvl 30 on archer class but I prefer magic classes so I'm busy leveling CNJ, ACN and THM. All below 20. Can I train chocobo too or do I need to wait until they are also level 30?

Either way, I can't remember how to 'get choco out' to fight? I unlocked it last year and there's so much I've forgotten oops. I know I need 'greens' to feed it and I have those in inventory. I tried googling but didn't find my answers.

    Thanks

if you've completed this quest you can summon your chocobo at any time, at any level by using a gysahl green

I must have done that one as I had started fight training with chocobo before I took a break from the game. So you're saying the feed is the trigger? Wish I'd thought of that.. I feel rather sill now for not trying it. Thanks

Yep! As long as you have ghyshal greens and have completed that level 30 quest, you can summon your chocopal anytime. I have done it a ton when leveling alt classes and trying to solo fates!

I had fun with choco fighting along side me today So now I wondering what tree to spec him into? I know my preference is for magic but may well choose to switch between the different magic classes, which means I maybe be healer or dps and swap between. That being the case and knowing that I will have a self-heal, would a chocobo healer be kind of redundant?

Do not spec your chocobo as a tank out of the gate unless you specifically want the tank barding first.
If you do not care about the bardings you are still better off with primarily heal tree for cure, atk tree for auto stuns and multiple trees for increased acc and hp buffs. The full tank birds either don't hold hate anyway, or get shreadded faster than you can heal them without stripping hate.

The tank tree is great for healers. The chocobo holds agro just fine until you're lv50 with an item level 100+ weapon. Usually just a regen is enough healing unless you're fighting more than two mobs at once. I wouldn't bother with it as another role though. It would just make the chocobo die all the time if you couldn't heal it.

I've found the healer tree to be the only worthwhile one myself. That said, I don't (or at least haven't) played a healer myself. I pretty much just use my chocobo to get extra healing. Any damage he does is just icing.

Tank tree is bad because unlike Carbuncle/Titan Egi, it will not spam its increased enmity moves. It autoattacks most of the time and will not gain much aggro. Most of the time you will steal aggro even as a healer. It has no tankiness to speak of either. its hp is pitiful and has no AI to avoid AoEs so it will eat everything to its face.

Attacker tree is quite viable and often used, and provides a passable dps increase but nothing to rely on.

Healer tree is where the juice is at because it will absolutely spam its heals and buffs as long as you're below 80% hp (in Healer Stance) and its heals get quite potent once you hit rank 7 (healing potency buff skill). The one glowering problem is that when in Healer Stance it will close to you while not budging much when you move to avoid incoming AoE.

Two things to be mindful of when using a Chocobo companion:

    1. its targetting is awkward. It will not attack anything until you attack something, and will stick with its target until the bitter end. It is good when you want it to finish off osmething below 1% health but not good when you want to switch priorities (like getting trash adds when dealing with a FATE boss for example)

    2. its AI and movement is primitive. Once it starts attacking it will not move. It will eat AoE to its face and won't care. So when you're fighting a Morbol, always face it away from it. This is one of the reasons why tank Chocobo is bad. It won't avoid any AoE nor can you order it to.
