Why does this game run better on a Mac through Wine than on a native windows 7?

I just followed the instructions to get FFXIV running on my mac, a 2011 17" macbook pro with 12 gig of DDR3 ram and that nvidia 6750m 1g graphics card.

Something I noticed though: The game runs smoother, at higher frame rates, and less crashes, on Mac OS X than on Bootcamp Windows 7.

That actually doesn't make sense to me. I've got 60 FPS and I ran an entire dungeon, as well as several events without crashing once. Even more awesome ... it lets you go into Fullscreen Mode and alt tab without crashing.

So ... it seems the Mac OS X version of FFXIV is superior to the windows version ... so Square-Enix should go ahead and port it to the Mac App Store ...

Back to the original question - Why would an emulated FFXIV be better than a native windows 7 version?

Is your Mac hardware is better than the PC hardware you were running it on?

It's the same computer. Macs can install windows on them using a method called Boot Camp, where it partitions the hard drive, installs a copy of windows, and has native drivers for it. It's not an emulated mode but rather just a regular windows install. I mean macs use PC hardware now, i7 processors, amd graphics cards, etc.

I was just surprised that after making FFXIV run in the Mac instead of Windows, that performance went UP.
(This is my laptop setup though, I primarily play on my Desktop)

Windows 7 is more of a resource hog than OS X, you can tell how much of a resource hog by turning desktop composition off and seeing how much more you can turn up your settings, I could more than double mine after that.

Yeah I never leave desktop composition running while playing :/. I'm hoping my new SSD will get rid of the crazy stuttering problem I have but I might be screwed till I can build a new rig.

OSX is probably just built more efficiently than windows. Not surprising. I still don't like macs much but they are pretty smooth.

macs are the spawn of saten, but this isnt a mac Vs windows thread (well it kind of is but not in this way) as I say its prolly just because Microsoft thinks we need all the bells and whistles to use a comp, bring back DOS as the OS but still beable to render 3d graphics for games and we will all beable to play at 60fps.

simple answer to your question, Linux and Mac OS both use much less system resources then Windows does (if left default)

I have turned off all the unneeded things on my Win7 and the game runs fine for me

Whoa thanks for the heads up about desktop composition. I've been playing on Windows 7 and never knew about that. My desktop fans run full blast while playing, but now they're much quieter. I also managed to turn up some setting.

out of curiosity, what stuff did you turn off in windows 7? I don't have an issue with performance per-se, but wouldn't mind turning some stuff off for a boost, it's basically just for gaming anyway, as I use my laptop for anything web related.

Edit: would also like to point out I have issues finding the stuff to turn them off, as with the desktop composition, where's that at?
