A fair number of NA servers, not just all of the NA Legacy servers, are frequently closed. The Japanese world servers rarely have this problem (at least according to the list)..

Certain JP servers are often closed to new characters (mine sometimes as well and it's supposedly low pop). Check mornings NA time (JP prime time) and you'll see. Remember too, there are actually more JP servers, so the population seems to be lower on each one.

I Roleplay with a bunch of friends on Brynhildr and have been trying to promote roleplaying there more with mt Free Company. The sad thing is everyone who roleplays is told "Oh Balmung's the place to be for Roleplaying" and no one is willing to give other servers a shot... heck I love making characters and I'm thinking of expanding to another server for more RP but I'm scared of Balmung because we had a brief member of our group that had come from there and didn't like how oppressive the atmosphere was there and how much pressure there was to RP. I'm pretty casual, I like having fun but I need OOC time too.

It's awesome that you are taking the initiative to start something on your server. Most people want to go to Balmung because they don't have to put forth any actual effort to make RP happen. It's already well established. :/ But oppressive? That I haven't noticed.

Considering that he founded the free company with me and then bailed and hopped to another server without telling anyone I am not so sure he is a reliable source, but he made it sound like everyone had to follow certain rules on the server and that you had to be able to mesh with anyone... Besides that though, I don't like the idea that I might not even be able to log in due to the server being bloated or the ridiculous economy ... Not sure if I want to deal with the hassle.

everyone had to follow certain rules on the server and that you had to be able to mesh with anyone...

I've seen zero evidence of this. And the mb looks about like any other ex- NA legacy server's.

Maybe they give you a set of atma if you make it in? ; ; (haha I wish >< ) Try again just after lunch time EST. I have my fingers crossed for you!

eta: It WOULD be nice if a mod could clarify what "closes" a server to character creation. Is it overall population? Number of active subscriptions? Number of people online at that time? And why does creation open only at these set times? Is it like traffic pacing?

A little weak level 1 Atma would be pretty funny to own.

And yeah knowing why the servers were closed would relieve a bit of stress and wonder.

here's what we need, ok? hear me out.

recruitment tokens. Player x has friend y who wants to be with them on server.

player x can give friend y a recruitment token, and this will allow friend y to bypass the server restriction, reserving him/her a slot for a character.

can simply restrict it so that one person can only use this feature maybe once a month. if you have a bunch of friends, daisy chain it. friend x gets in friend y who gets friend alpha who gets friend omega.

If you want to make a character on Balmung, Excalibur, or any of these other hard-to-join servers, pay attention to when the maintenances are. Know when the maintenances are scheduled to end and be ready. I got onto Balmung easily by waiting until the most recent maintenance had ended and then using saved character data to quickly finish the creation process.

That is a very good suggestion.

I will try that the next time I want to make a character. Unfortunately I didn't plan on that when I wanted to make the new one.

I might have to wait for it though the way it is going.
